[HowTo] Wifi Mount your DROID - Discussion

Im having the worst luck here.... i was able to copy n paste one single file (i been doing it in groups this whole time cutting and pasting) and it worked, i stopped for a while to get somethin to eat i come back i reconnect the netdrive to the ftp app and in the middle of just browsing through folders a pop up says "failure when receiving data from peer" now its constantly losing touch wit the phone and i cant simply browse without losing connection. Im scared it'll happen in the middle of editing a file and it'll corrupt my sdcard. I wont do anything else until i get some help to prevent any further harm im doing to the memory card.

=( sucks i like the whole idea of doing things through wifi it would help so much.

Any ideas why I can't reach my Droid either by the direct IP or DynDNS?

I've tried from three different locations and neither can reach the Droid. Wondering if anybody else has this issue, or if VZW might've caught on and started blocking remote access?

thanks for the info, rintintigger!
now if we can only find a way to browse a shared folder on our pc from the droid. i know it (the droid) probably already does, or will do soon... :)

Look for a free app called ES File Explorer - does exactly that..sitting in my house over wifi, I can see and access every shared folder on every computer and laptop in my house...it's awesome!..I can move files to/from the Droid, listen to music files on an external hard drive in the back room of the house, look at pics, anything that's shared, I can access it, read it, write to it, copy/cut/move/paste delete, etc..
Now, if I can just find something like that on the PC to be able to see the Droid that way (I use 64-bit Win7 and NetDrive won't work on that), I'll be a happy clam..

Install FTP Server on Droid
Set a static DHCP mapping to the Droid's MAC address (so it always gets the same IP)
Add the Droid to your DNS server, or add it to your hosts file
Right click My Computer, Add Network Drive, then click on "Connect to a web site..." and specify ftp://droid or whatever you call your droid

You can also use this with your media application to sync music to your device over wifi.

I'm continually amazed at how much you can do on these phones. I have both the ES File Manager and the FTP server app - both work great and allow me complete freedom to move files back and forth between my Droid and my desktop/laptop. The main issues that I hit with both was dealing with the router settings and the dynamic IP adresses that get assigned to my three systems - 2 PC's and the phone - on the WIFI network.

Jeremy - this sounds great, but you lost me on these two - while I have considerable experience building and working with computers, networking is not my strong suit...
I'm assuming the DHCP mapping would be set up in my router? If so, does that mean I have to assign static IPs to all computers in the house then, since the router is set to automatically hand out IPs?

And, I have no idea how to add something to my DNS server or hosts file..

Awesome!! works great for transferring music. thanks. :)

I'm in the same boat. Going to the dyndns website I do see that my current 3G IP is shown, but I can't connect to it or even ping it from my PC.
WiFi works fine, but I'd like to get the 3G figured out...

3G Connection + FTPServer android app = not working for me. I checked using MyIP, so I know the IP that Vz Wireless has assigned my Droid at the moment, however FTPServer doesn't seem to bind that IP to the server.

The the top bar of FTPServer, it simply says "FTPServer (0.0.0.0:2002) - 0 sessions"

Help reads "Using 3G only works 1) if connecting device is on same network (which I am not), or 2) if your mobile operator (verizon wireless) does not use any proxy.

So I'm guessing because my problem is 1, 2, or both.

Listen, I love my Droid as much as the next person but don't you think this "mounting it" business is going a bit too far?

LOL, not if something has borked your USB mounting or you would like to work more than 18 inches from your computer.:icon_ devil:

Okay, this is getting frustrating. I've set up everything per the How To and tweaked every setting I can find with no luck. It will not connect to the droid for love or money. I have network magic installed and IT sees the Droid at IP 192.168.1.104 so it does exist on the system and in my wireless network as does the HP laptop I'm trying to connect to. The lights are on and everybody is at home. The damn Droid just won't answer the door! I know it's in there hiding from me.:icon_evil:
Mostly just get a "time out error" The NetDrive forum is useless. Nobody is answering any questions there.
I saw mention of Goiogling the error message but I cannot find any devs dealing with this. Got a link?

I haven't tried it on 3G, I will tomorrow if I have time, but I would not be at all surprised if Verizon has a firewall or proxy between their phone network and the internet that will not allow incoming connections on high numbered ports to the phone network.

it worked over 3g for me... just looked up ip with myip and set it to that ip on the net drive *shrug*
