I can considering the droid 2 but after reading this I'm Greatly Dissapointed!

Can't really disagree about the Pizza Hut thing except that I had delivery addresses and account information saved so that I could order a pizza in about 15 seconds.

As far as my Google contacts, when I powered up the phone the first time it ran a wizard. basically it automatically activated the phone, and then loaded and ran Verizon backup assistant which I had on my old phone. This downloaded all my contacts into my D2. It then asked for my Google account, and synced my calendar and linked with my email. My contacts however were never synced. I have about 2 contcacts on my google account, I put them there for testing, and about 265 contacts on my D2 which were downloaded from backup assistant.

So, maybe the answer is to do the factory reset. But, I've purchased a couple of apps. I suppose they are lost.....

OK, that helps clear it up...the answer (IMHO) is that VZW are idiots for enabling backup assistant on Android phones - it just causes confusion.

The reset won't help - you'll have the same issue...

You're the second person posting on this issue that I've seen recently. I've never used backup assistant to restore contacts from another phone so i can't review how it works on my own droid, but from what I've seen the contacts that Backup assistant loads to your phone are disconnected from Gmail contacts sync'd from your Gmail account.

There may be an easy way to connect the two, but as I said, since I can't do this on my phone I can't look at it myself.

So what happens is all your contacts downloaded by Backup Assistant are "orphaned" and don't connect with any of the cloud that the rest of the phone uses, and it appears they can only be backed up/restored using Backup Assistant.

There may be a simple solution to copy your Backup Assistant contacts to a Gmail account so they are properly sync'd to/from your phone via your Gmail account, but I don't know it. That would be a good question to ask VZW - they must have received calls on this issue from other customers.

One potential option - there is an Export option in Contacts under Menu>More>Import/Export>Export Contacts to SD card.

You may be able to export the 200-odd contacts your D2 to your SD card, and then copy the file(s) to your computer and import them into your Gmail account contacts.

Just tried it and it seemed to work - was able to go to Gmail contacts, select the import option, select the VCF file created on my phone by the export, and the contacts were imported to my Gmail account.

To add on to redflea, you can go on the verizonwireless website, sign into your account and go to your contacts.

From there you can export them as a csv file to outlook, then go to gmail and import them as a csv file. I was unable to do this because I have a mac and don't have outlook.

I had to one by one add contacts to my g-mail list (over 200 contacts). It was worth it though after seeing that any time you edit a contact on the computer it is instantly changed on your phone.

It seems that if you load a rom that removes back up assistant, it removes all your contacts. Somehow everyone should eventually get around to putting your contacts on your Gmail.

I did try the export but I could not get it to import into OUtlook. I tried Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010. They all get an error that the file is corupted. I will try calling Verizon again and see what they say. Wish me luchk.

Odd.

By the way, you don't need to import them into outlook, you can import them into your Gmail account, then they will sync to your phone automatically.

then you could use the gmail sync app to sync from your Gmail account to/from your Outlook account, which would then get all the contacts from your Gmail account.

Just another way to approach it.

The import worked for me, so you might have corrupt file...try the export/import again if VZW isn't any help.

Ok. So... I did the factory reset, which wiped the D2.
I exported my contacts from the Verizon Backup Assistant, and imported them into my Google Contacts.

I then setup the Google GMail, and NOT the Backup Assistant.

So now, everything is syncing with Google just find. I just have to spend the next few days getting my Droid back to how I had it.

I did try to reinstall Backup Assistant, and now it does not work. I talked to someone at Verizon, and he beleives the two don't work well together. he had a similar problem. Although, he beleives a firmware update in the future will probably fix it.

Anyway, I am ok with that. I am using a trial version of 'Companionlink' for now to sync my Outlook with Google. Not sure I want to pay $40.00, but may have to. I like having all of it synced up.

So.. thank you all for your help. I am feeling much better about this. Slowlly getting all the apps that I want, etc. and getting used to using the D2.

Great news...glad things are getting back to normal for you. :)

The Google sync app is free, you might want to try that as well as you're figuring out how you want to tie things together.

So, an update and a Question

Well I can say not that all has been resolved. My D2 syncs perfect with Google. I did resetup my Backup Assistant, and it actually failed... at first. It seemed to timeout, I think my reception here is bad, but basically I left it alone, hoping that it syncing would not wipe out everything. And actually it is now working perfect. So I have a full sync with Google, and a full backup with Backup Assistant!!! Perfection!!

Now for my question.....
Championlink, or Google Apps. I don't care about the $10.00 price difference. Just functionality. I am not using exchange. so, doesn't Google Apps require exchange to work? My email is just a gmail account.

Any advice greatly appreciated here.

And thanks to all of you who helped me solve my first problem. This forum is AWESOME!!!!

As someone who switched from a Blackberry Tour to a Droid 2, I think I can provide a contrasting, but fair opinion compared to "PinkBlackBerryChick" there.

Pros of the Droid 2

-Web browsing, like other Droid phones, is excellent. There is simply nothing out there that compares, other than perhaps the iPhone, which limits you to AT&T's network, and does not support Adobe Flash.
-Lots of applications through the Droid Market, plenty of which are free.
-If you have a GMail or Google Apps account, there is no phone that integrates better than an Android-based phone. Calendar, Contacts, and mail, it's all there.
-The Droid 2 and Droid X currently have the best battery life of any Android phones on the market.
-If you want a physical keyboard and a Verizon phone, the Droid 2 is it, since no others in Verizon's lineup have the keyboard. The keyboard itself is pretty good (note: if you're not bound to a single carrier, Samsung and HTC do have phones with keyboards on other networks).
-The Droid 2 is solidly built -no construction issues.
-The Droid 2 is responsive and fast.

Cons of the Droid 2
-The camera --how do I put this? It sucks. My BB Tour's 3.2 megapixel camera kicked this one's butt. I don't know if it's the camera software or the phone, but if the camera is extremely important to you, you're better off with the HTC Incredible (note: the Incredible's battery life is much shorter, so you'll need to balance your needs). Low-light pictures with the Droid 2 are especially bad.

-The other cons aren't so much cons, they're just notes on polishing the Android operating system. I needed an application to allow custom notifications for different people texting me --the Blackberry can do that without an app. The Blackberry has a nice setup for sound profiles that Droid phones just don't have.

The Droid 2, and all Android phones aren't perfect --but they're very good. If the Droid 2's camera were better, I'd put it as about 98% of the perfect phone.

Actually, the Droid 2 isn't the ONLY Verizon Android phone with a physical keyboard. LG Ally and Motorola Devour also have physical keyboards. The Droid 2 is just better than the others (with the exception of a dedicated number row, which the Droid 1/2 doesn't have).

Camera on Droid 1 was great IMO, but I have heard the camera on Droid 2 sucks. I don't understand why this is, since they both use the same hardware for the camera. Could be Android not playing nice with the camera since the release of 2.2. And as for the low light pics, I thoguht the flash was suppose to help that, but again, I still don't get why the camera for the Droid 2 is suc a pain.

Everything else looks to be on point. My original position on the reviewer stands. She can't even get her dates right on how long she's had a phone, so I am not about to trust her for anything phone-related.

Love mine...camera sucks but that might be user error admittedly as I'm not a techie, but I didn't buy it for the camera. From an average users view, it's a great phone.

I got the d2 as a replacement and I like it a lot, I'm not a big fan of the blur but still a great phone.

I like some of the widgets, but the contact sync with facebook sucks. Most of the blur widgets have a generic look to them and it seems like they removed the ability to do a direct dial shortcut, and I used that alot on my D1. Like I said I think the phone is great. I am not sure if you can realy get something that has 100 % of waht everyone is looking for but so far the D2 a good 98% there.
