I'm NOT crazy afterall!

@jkayner when I'm on web pages I usually read them rather than flick scroll up and down. So I'm a little unclear why it's annoying.

And yes you are correct it is an evolution of 1.5, 1.6 but it's still new code on new hardware and 2.0 is an overall rock solid OS. It performs excellent and does what it's supposed to quickly and efficiently.

Is Android 2.0 perfect? No...but it's darn well pretty solid. I'm a few studders here and there is the only thing you need to deal with consider yourself lucky : )

Again look at the overall picture of where it is at and where it is going. It's pretty impressive.

^ agreed. not only is it new code on new hardware, but they still are in the process of fine tuning the code to the hardware.

as for the choppiness or stutter that occurs in some cases, it's not as bad as the complaints will have you believe. yes it is real and it does happen. however, what we saw in that video is not a normal use case, meaning most users will not load graphic intensive sites and continuously flick scroll up and down.

as for why it's happening it looks to be as someone mentioned earlier...the processor catching up with redrawing the images on the screen. i'm not really surprised at the slight choppiness....it's a large screen with high resolution. this may be resolved in future os by increasing the processing power of the cpu and/or gpu when required or some other coding optimization, but we'll have to see.

these are all issues i can happily live with as i don't find it to be distracting or diminishing the end result...a fully rendered high resolution web page or image.

Wanted to chime in here and say that everybody has to remember that 2.0 was just released a little under a month ago.

It will take some time to get it's legs through updates and such BUT seeing that it is still in it's infancy stages the device runs excellent. Perfect? No..but it runs VERY well.

To expect perfection right out of the gates only leads to disappointment (which we are seeing here). The video showed some jerkiness. Did it impede on the usability? No it did not. It didn't scroll perfectly smooth is all. Personally I would rather have the browser work excellent, render pages beautifully and fast and not have any pixelation while it's trying to play catch up. If the laggyness was unbearable and hindered the experience I would not be a happy camper but this is not the case.

I'm not downplaying the issue I'm just saying that if thats all I have to put up with right now, I'm good : )

I think 640k said it best in that we should all step back and take a look at the bigger picture. VZW's Droid is a huge success for Android/Google and we will reap the benefit's because the real development has not even begun.

If you are really unhappy I understand. Take the device back and wait for these things to be ironed out and perfected.

For me I find the device rock solid for being less than a month old. I was an avid BB user and the Android experience has been near "perfect"

No complaints.

CK I love it when I can agree with your posts like this one here.

Also coming from the BB I can say that the Droid is well above my expectations and performance is nice out of the box. Sure there is room for improvement and optimization but that will only make the device better.

I dont experience any of the jerkiness in robo defense but I do see it in the browser from time to time if it is trying to load the full version of the web page.

welcome Ainvar : )

yet another hardore BB convert lol

Just wanted to chime in that I've also experienced the jerkiness when switching between home screens, scrolling apps menu, scrolling through settings, etc. It seemed to work perfect out of the box but I noticed the screen lag after a day or so after only installing a few small apps.

I agree that this is not a big issue in terms of usability for me. Much bigger for me is the battery life issue, but that's a whole other beast. I'd be more than pleased if I just had to deal with the screen lag and had no battery life issues. Just my $.02

rock solid is a stretch for sure. I have had a handful of random reboots and have had to pull the battery once to get it to turn back on. Overall it is a good start but it leaves much to want for future releases.

@ Ainvar, you dont notice the jerkiness in RoboDroid because you dont have a good frame of reference. If you compared the Droid and (from what it seems) any other Android phone side-by-side as I did, you will definitely see what I am talking about.

@cereal killer, you never load a website knowing you need to scroll down to get to a certain point on it? You read every word on the page slowly until you get to what you need? I look forward to the day when I can navigate the web as fast and smooth on my Droid as I can on my ipod touch. I don't want to have to wait for the droid to catch up with what I'm telling it to do.

Overall it is a good start but it leaves much to want for future releases. I have not had one random reboot since release and device has not been shut down in 11 days. So for me it's been rock solid and I believe a majority of users can say the same.

@cereal killer, you never load a website knowing you need to scroll down to get to a certain point on it? You read every word on the page slowly until you get to what you need? yes, but I don't flick it up and down. I scroll at a rate where I can see where I'm at in the body of the page. So the slight jerkiness, as seen in the video, when rendering graphic intense pages never presents itself to me through my normal usage habits. I will say that if I do want to flick it to the bottom it will get there in one swipe without me touching it. So thats a cool feature : )

responses in red.

I understand you are a little unhappy right now. Not everyone is going to agree on how good the device is and thats just the nature of the beast.

You want to see some improvements and there is nothing wrong with that.

Just a heads up to those who want more speed, if you install Panda Home it makes the homescreen scrolling much smoother. Just a suggestion

I see the jerkiness in the browser but I seriously dont see it with anything else. Maybe you have a dud? I have had smart phones since 1999 back when they were just monochrome and have always had one since. I know what to look for in screen tearing and jerkiness and I do not have it. I am able to play robo defense and it does not freeze or jerk (unless I am getting a notification).

I am sure you are having the problems you are having but it could be all about how you have things configured or what you have installed. But myself I am not experiencing most if not all of these issues.

I dont have to do a reboot every day or week. So far my phone has been up for 13 days or so. I have not had a slowdown or anything yet. I still have the burned in habit of wanting to do a battery pull every day.

I'm fine with my Droid... I'm sure it's just Android 2.0. It isn't really a big issue for me, I love the phone.

new hardware and new software. It's not going to be done completely right the first time. This is pretty much a beta phone and we are the market they're testing it on, which i don't mind at all cause this phone is awesome. So to the people who think it should be better, go get it exchanged for an Eris. It takes time for these things to get done right, but hopefully we see improvements on the 11th, if not, i'm still completely happy with this phone.

I love how people are arguing despite the fact everyone pretty much agrees with each other :D. Yes 2.0 is new, so yes it's not 100% refined yet, so yes, the OP is likely correct that the jerkiness issue is a software issue. To me, it doesn't effect usability per se - it just somewhat diminishes the "wow factor" of the phone - in short, jerkiness makes it look slightly "shoddy" when compared to say the iPhone's transitions.

That said, it's new software, so give it time. I bought this device not just for what it offers me now (which is a lot), but it's promise down the road. It is the first "Google Experience" phone, and the first running Android 2.0. I think these two factors combine to mean it will be a flagship device for quite some time, and will receive excellent support and frequent updates from Verizon and Google.

This, to me, is in contrast to say the Eris - which is very polished now - but in my view is probably at or near the end of its potential. Sure, it *may* get 2.0 at some point, but then again, it may not. The bottom line is, if you want an Android device and want to be sure to be "in on" the latest Android developments, the Droid is the phone to have.

What would make for a very interesting test, is if somebody could get a motorola Droid and install android 1.6 on it, and see how it runs. I would do it, if somebody would be kind enough to instruct me on how to do it, and of course, how to go back to 2.0

I think this test would reveal a lot about whether this lag that a lot of us are seeing, is software or hardware related (or heck, maybe even both).

requires ROOTING the droid. which would unlock even more. but that's another thread. has yet to be done tho...
