Input For Upgrade

Again I'll go back to suggesting a Note4. A quick glance on Swappa showed me they're available in your price range now. Beast of a phone, spec and performance wise , at a yesteryear price. 32GB onboard storage + removable memory capability . Great battery life after 5.1 gets installed but a removable battery is still an option in case your signal is craptacular all day or you're just a power user. AW works fine in it as well. The camera is tough to beat with anything but the S7.
Just something to think about

I love that Crapple added the ability to remove bloatware

Sounds appealing, but when I looked at pricing on Swappa for something better than fair, it kinda puts me over the top of my price range.
I DO use my hands free features on my Maxx -- a lot. I also love the active display, so I'm kinda thinking I might be better off staying within the Motorola family. I do like the size and screen on the Notes, though.

It's the smaller of the two 2015 Nexus phones. It's a great phone. Average resale value on Swappa right now is $245 for the 16GB and $285 for the 32GB

A little too pricey right now.

My advice probably hasn't changed much since the last time I posted here, but I'll post it again. Forum regulars know that I am a Moto fan (surprise! :D); but I also appreciate and have respect for many phones on the market. I can attest to the quality of the Samsung Note series, excellent advice from @mountainbikermark . I have a Note 2 as my company provided work phone. It's obviously an older model, but I am the second owner and it's on its 4th straight year of everyday use. It's still as rock-solid as Day 1, an all around great phone with excellent build quality. My only pet peeve with it....that blinking LED light. It drives me crazy! After using Moto's Active Display for 2+ years now, I can't stand the blinking LED lights on other phones and can't imagine ever buying a phone without Active Display. But that's just me.

As many have said around here before, there is no "right" phone or "best" phone, only the right phone for you the user. From what I could see on Swappa, the Samsung Note 4, Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G4, HTC One M9, Droid Maxx 2 and Droid Turbo may all be in the price range you mentioned. All of those are great phones and would probably work great for you.

If you really like Moto's Active Display, Touchless Controls and Moto App features (like Driving Mode) then those features will be hard to find on any phone other than Moto. If those are things you can live without, the Samsung, LG and HTC phones above are great choices.

The Huawei Nexus 5x that @Mustang02 mentioned is a great phone also, but may fall outside of your budget right now.

If you do want to stick with a Moto, there are 64GB Droid Turbo's selling for right around $218 on Swappa, and 32GB selling for around $161. That is a great phone and you would love it coming from a Droid Maxx. It has all of the features of the Maxx, and then a few more. It's also scheduled to receive the Android Marshmallow update at some point, so that's another bonus. The only possible issue with the Turbo is no SD Card slot; but if you can find a 64GB for around $200 that may not be an issue. Another Moto phone to consider is the Droid Maxx 2. It came out last year along with the Turbo 2. It doesn't have the shatter shield screen like the Turbo 2, but is a great phone and much more affordable than the Turbo 2. The Maxx 2 is less than a year old, has an SD Card slot and a 3600 mAh battery.

Good luck & happy shopping! :)

Is the Turbo much larger than the Maxx? I'm torn between wanting something larger or sticking with something similar to the size I have now so I don't have to replace my universal car dock or holster. I really like the larger phone (didn't think I would but some of my clients have them and my tired eyes seem to pine for a larger screen. My wallet tells me to stick with something along the size of my Maxx...

The Droid Maxx has a 5.0" screen and the Turbo has a 5.2" screen. It's a little bigger, but didn't really feel any bigger when I switched.

The color scheme is red & black and has a custom inscription somewhere that states Employee Edition. It's the same software as every other Turbo, just a special color scheme for Big Red. They do those with every new Droid.

EDIT: I just saw the phone you mentioned. I guess for the Turbo it was just all black ballistic nylon, with a red Droid symbol on the back. Nice looking phone for that price!

For the Samsung folks, is there truly much of a difference between the Note 3 and Note 4? Also, If I wanted to go with the smaller body of a Samsung, what's the lowest Galaxy number I should look at? I know they are up to a 7 now, how low can I go and still be fairly current with apps and such?

I would personally aim for a galaxy s6. If you're really pressed for cash then the s5.

Surely you have an upgrade due through Verizon no? That would put you into the latest S7 with little out of pocket. Otherwise I'd go with a used or refurbished S5 over the S6 if battery life is a concern.

Just sayin.....if you're gonna upgrade, upgrade to the best. [emoji6]

S5 tap'n

I still have the family on unlimited data. Ain't touchin' that....
As much as I would love to have the latest and greatest, I can't afford to buy outright, so settle for a couple of generations ago. Heck, I nursed my Bionic along until I couldn't get it to function for anything other than making calls -- sometimes. I'm good with staying behind y'all. You guys get to figure it all out and by the time I am ready to buy, I come here and y'all have it all figured out as what's good and what to avoid ;)

Well, I thought we converted cr6 to a Moto fanboy, but apparently not. I see he is still peddling Samsung phones. [emoji12] [emoji3]
