Insurance Policy for VZW & Asurion

Sounds like this is going to be one of those grey areas. I am paying what I have been paying for the last several years (so my monthly cost did not go up), but I called Verizon and the rep told me there is no grandfathering for the deductible.

That said, I did replace my Omnia after the price hike, and only paid 50 dollars.

I haven't called Asurion yet, and don't really want to start the process on a fake claim to see what they will charge me online ;)

I wish I wouldn't have called and changed my insurance otherwise I might have been grandfathered in. :(

Did you by chance ask what they covered as opposed to the VZW insurance package (specifically water damage ect.). Just wanted to double check. I'll probably take the drive tomorrow, this looks like a better deal (ESPECIALLY the 'new phone' part).

I didn't ask that specifically because on the website it quotes "What happens if you phone gets wet, lost, stolen or damaged?"

I can't find any info on the website that directs to that, but my guess would yes, they have the coverage. But I'll call again tomorrow to verify and update my post.

I found this website with a complaint about protectcell HERE. Rather interesting read, imo.

Here's their BBB page (note they are NOT a accredited BBB company)
Digital Leash Review - CELLULAR TELEPHONE SERVICE AND SUPPLIES in Plymouth, MI - BBB Reliability Report - BBB serving Southfield, Serving Detroit, Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula

But Asurion is and highly rated:
http://www.bbb.org/nashville/busine...on-insurance-services-in-nashville-tn-2131781
(there are multiple listings for Asurion but they all seam to have A or A+ ratings)

And I can personally say I've used Asurion (via AT&T) at least 3 times and have never had a problem with them (other than getting a 'refurb').

I think I am going to check with my insurance company also to see if they have anything similar to State Farms coverage. I'll let you know.

Looks like you linked to the same thing for the two different places. lol

Yes I did, thanks put the correct link in now.

I seem have both. I paid for the 2-year at a Verizon associate store, thinking it was a one-time purchase for the Asurion. But Asurion's $5.99 is on my Verizon bill. At least I have options with a claim. Even so, my monthly bill is $16 less per month than with my Voyager.

So you effectively have both insurances?

Since they are separate policies, I would say yes.

To explain a bit. I got the Droid from BB and I didn't want their insurance. I went the next day to a Verizon store (not realizing it was an associate store) to have them transfer my contacts and to get insurance.

Ah, well at least you have options. lol

been debating if i want to keep the asurion. with the $89 deductible, it seems high. after having it for a yr anyways, you can buy the phone at non full price. probably the $199. so basically for $100 more, you get a brand new one. i dunno..i need to break down the math.

I thought you had to keep it until the end of your contract term to be eligible for a renewal discount. At 2 years, I believe the price was in the neighborhood of $199, and with a 1 year contract, its probably substantially higher, considering the phone is several hundred ($600-$700) outright.

And I personally think that an $89 deductible for a brand new replacement phone is a pretty decent deal if something happens to a covered phone. But that seems rather steep for a refurbished phone, which is typically Asurion's M.O.

after one full yr you are eligible for the $199 price of the droid for example. of course you don't get the ne2. with my ne2 i can get the droid for $99. so i'm thinking in about a yr, i can get a new droid for $199 or a refurb for $89. but in a yr, i would've paid $6/mo * 12 = $72. dunno if it's still worth it to me.

If you have more than one line on the account, only the primary line is eligible for the every year discount, all other lines can only receive the New Every 2.

HOWEVER, there is a possibility to use the Alternate Number Upgrade.

I believe this is a very good investment for your Droid. I carry it on 2 devices

I do not believe this is a good investment at all. for $8 a month because maybe your phone will break, I dont think so. If your phone doesn't break or whatever you will lose $194. My sister had a manufacturer defect on one of her phones and she was out of the warranty date but they replaced it. All you need is a good argument. Unless you have no clue how to hold a phone tightly in your hand you dont need insurance. Unless you got money to waste.
