I'm sorry to sound urgent, but we're leaving tomorrow for a trip abroad (outside the US). I was planning to put my Motorola Droid in airplane mode and use it for wifi only (802.11x) while overseas. Will I (and can I) be charged for data usage by Verizon if I am using wifi hotspots only (i.e., not on their network, not using the 3G EVDO or "cellular" network). I haven't bought the international plan and was just planning to use the Droid as a mini-laptop computer to access the web.

Thanks for any help,

Chashood

No, that is fine. Technically if you have the phone on and dont access data you can still receive texts, as long as you don't open them, but I wouldn't try it. Use WiFi. Also, if you download Fring and get a Skype account you can use it to make calls over WiFi for pennies. I believe you can use some other methods to make calls using WiFi for free.
