iPhone can DROID can't?

  • Droid is on Verizon's CDMA network. CDMA does not support simultaneous voice and data. In a sense, the Verizon network cannot multi-task.
  • The Droid can multi-task so, in theory, shouldn't you be able to simultaneously have a VOIP phone call and do other Internet stuff, emails, etc?

  • iPhone is on AT&T's GSM network. GSM can do both voice and data at the same time.
  • The iPhone device cannot generally multi-task, but there are a couple of things it can do concurrently. My old 2G iPhone can play iPod music while you do Internet stuff. Maybe video works the same way.

Funny summary
- the Droid can multi-task, but runs on a network that generally can't. The iPhone generally does not multi-task but runs on a network that can. So, an iPhone on CDMA would be the worst of all possible worlds...a device that does not multi-task on a network that can't either.

Perhaps this is why the Verizon iPhone won't appear on Verizon until Verizon launches their next generation network?

I can't believe why anybody would make a big deal about this honestly.

For one thing, if I'm on the phone with someone and then I try to go look something up on the Internet at the same time - well that's pretty damn rude. Just tell them you'll call them back. Better yet, just text them! I mean c'mon, is this really a "feature" that someone is going to want to use so much, that the lack of it will make or break their purchase?

I don't think this is the "Huge Problem" that people are making it out to be. Why would you want streaming music playing while on a phone call? That's just stupid! A phone call is a phone call, it is a PHONE, and a call should trump all other uses.

Wrong u can voice and data on cdma but vzw has it Locked down
Then Sprint must have it locked down as well because on a Palm Pre on Sprint, I wasn't able to do this either. I also haven't been able to find documentation stating that any implemented EVDO Rev A allows this.

The commerical about AT&T and the IPhone using voice & data at the same time is pretty lame. Not for how it's presented, but just that the feature is not something that the majority, if even 3%, use.

In fact, if you realistically try to do this, it's quite annoying for the person on the other end of the call to sit there in dead air waiting for you to look something up. Most people just say, I'll check and let me call you back.

This ability amazes me that it gets so much credit. AT&T is horrible for the phone reach yet people worry about surfing and using the phone at the same time. Plus...they always blame Verizon for this instead of the network itself. I guess commercials work for the unaware.

This has been discussed before...

CDMA (Verizon's network) does not allow for simultaneous voice + data. When Verizon launches their 4G (LTE) network next year it will allow for that and then AT&T will have no argument.

Not only that, but AT&T/Apple's ad is only true in 3G areas. Edge can't do simultaneous voice/data either and that comprises 90% of their coverage.
Agreed.

So they are still limited to their lame 3G coverage as seen by the maps in the Verizon commercial.

I love how AT&T threw a hissy-fit when Verizon came out with their (truthful) 3G map coverage commercials, claiming they were "misleading" to customers, but when it comes to their own ads, they conveniently forget to point out that their 3G coverage is so crappy that simultaneous voice/data won't matter 90% of the time since you can't even get a signal to begin with. How's that for misleading advertising?

I realize they're both big corporations and have to play the spin-game, but come on, that is so lame. Unfortunately, as soon as these Apple-created ads air, the zombiefied masses who believe everything Apple says will fall for their b.s. AGAIN like they have been the past few years. All because of Apple's pretty lil commercials with the annoyingly catchy music from one-hit wonders and bright colors... "Ooh look! It's red and green and yellow and the people are dancing... Tee-hee! I must buy it so I can be like them!"

Sorry for the rant lol

I feel the need to pipe in.

The droid multitasks verrry well,

And if you are connected to wifi while on the phone you will still have internet functionality, soooo there's that. If you've got wifi you can.

Hmm, I just called myself and tried using the browser to look up a movie. No dice. It seems when a call is in progress, it cuts off internet access.
I don't know what you tried, but as silenceforus said, if you are connected to WiFi, you can browse the web while on a call.

EVDO, also known as EV-DO, 1xEvDO and 1xEV-DO, is a standard for high speed wireless broadband. The acronym is short for "Evolution, Data Only" or "Evolution, Data Optimized". The official name, defined by the Telecommunication Industry Association, is "CDMA2000, High Rate Packet Data Air Interface". It is one of two major Third Generation, or 3G, wireless standards. The competing standard is known as W-CDMA.
3G is designed to provide voice and high-speed mobile data using the cellular approach already proven to work in mobile phone networks. The biggest obstacle to implementing high speed wireless networks is the lack of bandwidth, or range of usable frequencies. Just as only so many radio stations can be squeezed onto the FM dial, only so much data can be transmitted across the available bandwidth. EVDO is an advanced CDMA technology developed by Qualcomm to deal with this limitation.
CDMA, Code Division Multiple Access, uses advanced mathematical techniques to allow multiple wireless devices to transmit simultaneously on the same frequency. Every device, such as a cell phone, is assigned a unique mathematical signature. It applies this signature to the original signal and transmits the modified signal. A receiver applies the inverse of the mathematical operation to recover the original signal.
Traditional wireless networks create a physical path between receiving and sending devices, much like traditional telephone networks. EVDO instead adopts the same approach used for the internet. IP, the Internet Protocol, breaks data into small pieces called packets. Each packet is sent independently of all the other packets. This saves bandwidth for use by other devices; when neither party on a phone call is speaking, the connection consumes no bandwidth because there are no packets to send. Or, when an internet web site is accessed, no bandwidth is used until the site starts sending the web page.
EVDO has a theoretical throughput of 2.4 megabits per second. This is as fast as many residential DSL and cable broadband connections currently available in the United States. Qualcomm has produced impressive demonstrations of EVDO's capabilities; in one, a video conference was conducted with a participant traveling in a car at 60 miles per hour (96 km/hour). In another demonstration, a phone call was placed from a bullet train moving in excess of 150 miles per hour (240 km/hour).
A significant advantage of EVDO over competing technologies is that it uses the same broadcasting frequencies as existing CDMA networks. As purchasing spectrum from regulatory agencies is extremely expensive, this brings down the cost of building and using the new networks. The major EVDO deployments in the US are by Verizon and Sprint, and there is also a large network in Korea. At present, EVDO has not made significant impact in Europe or other major Asian markets; W-CDMA is the 3G standard of choice in those regions.

Ok can I ask about something else " not even relative to this network things" that Iphone can, and Droid can't , and i would love if someone tells me how to make it do able on droid.
On my Iphone and Droid I have Skype installed, and I can do " Skype Contact " free calling on Iphone, But for a reason i don't even have the option " Call " on the Droid, Fring even didn't let me do this, and some people says on Droid VOIP calling might even use ur minutes !!! what the heck :O, please if someone know tell me how to make Skype VOIP free calling, so the Droin can do too ;)
Thanks

Not sure why it doesn't work for you but I have Fring installed on my Droid and have made Skype-to-Skype calls to relatives overseas just fine. And it doesn't use your voice minutes. I checked.

Do you at least see your Skype contacts listed in Fring along with the rest?

Yes i do see them " i think " but the call option is in gray and can't hit it ....
