it ended up rebooting itself, so I'm going to try again. The gray menu came up where I could select Recovery, and I hit the up volume when it was highlighted, and then the dead android guy showed up. Is this correct?

That is correct then hit the volume buttons to take it to the next screen.

okay, it's not working. The android guy is lauing on his back, with the front door open (to get to his controls), and the big red exclamation point triangle is there again
