I've rooted but now i cant get connected using ADB

I have rooted my phone and put on the flash_image and recovery-.99.2b ior whatever and i am trying to do a customs recovery image so i can do a full nandroid backup but it wont connect to my driod. I type adb shell and returns with no device. i type adb devices n it says list attached but nothing. ive downloaded the new usb drivers for my system (xp 64bit). I dn how else to connect them or something ive been reading but nothing. please help. I am using rootyourdriod.info website to do all these commands. i just wanna make sure i back things up before i install rom
