No I'm not nor did i ever say that koush is working with Google. And yes it is open source as in open to the public you can modify code however you wish so perhaps you should do some reading. There are many dif. Open source licenses and yes by definition android is open source there code is open to the community read up on gnu

please dont tell me about open source licenses. the public can only modify the code (which google creates) after google releases it to the public. it is open source in the sense that google will let you do whatever they want with it after they create it.

in other words "you can build whatever house you want as long as its the house i give you"....you can't see the code for Honeycomb until google decides you can.

if you could, we wouldn't have to wait for Google to release Gingerbread source to get Gingerbread roms on a D1. There would be nightlies where we could download the latest source and create alpha and beta Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs right now.

Firefox has nightlies, Linux has nightlies, any other "true" open source project will let the community see the code before it's officially released. android does not allow that. it is not true open source.

And...you're wrong...again....

Developers can't look into an OS version until it's finished. What part of this do you not understand.?

The source is not public until a major release. You don't see the source for Gingerbread until Gingerbread is released. You can't contribute to Gingerbread until Google decides you can...

Would you like to show me your contributions to Honeycomb? Oh wait...you can't...because you're not allowed to contribute...right?

So AHEM AHEM...indeed...

Did you even read through the site?

Here read this page.

People are able to contribute and if their code/suggestion is approved it is added to the next official implementation of Android. Just because it doesn't fit YOUR definition of open source it does in fact meet the "general" definition of open source.

Ahem.

haha...it's not my definition of open source. it's the definition of open source. you're suggesting that google creating a software version, keeping the source completely under lock and key until they finish creating it, and then releasing it is true open source? i mean...seriously? google creates the base code, google and google alone rejects or approves changes, google does not release the source until they decide they want to, you as a developer cant see, let alone edit, the source until google tells you you can, and you're comparing this to projects like Linux and Firefox which are the opposite of this in every way imagineable?? Really??

Google touted android as "open source" to win over people like you and the other guy who have no idea what open source means. Clearly they were successful. They are obviously not closed source, but to argue that they're truly open source is about as dumb as saying the iphone would NEVER come to verizon because we would have heard about court cases and lawyers who were fighting the breach of contract or something? That was you, right? LOL. Arguing for the sake of arguing is your strong point. Winning the arguments clearly isn't.

Wow. Your ignorance knows no bounds. Quit googling OPEN SOURCE and pretending you have a clue what your talking about.

Wait a f'in minute guys!!!

This is NOT the intent of this thread! I did not want to start a open source debate. In all honesty I can give a **** about open source.

All I care about is that my device can do what I want and how I want it to!

I've had a D1 since they were launched and I have been on countless ROMS for much of that time. The ROMS are more of a personal addiction than a deal breaker. Open source has only given me 3 features that I use often. At least that I know of. 1. ROM manager, 2. tethering, and 3. root to be able to do that stuff in the first place.

Here's what I want to do with my device, you tell me if a jailbroken Iphone can do it:

1. Check my gmail with an app, not the website.
2. Have a widget for my google calendar.
3. Allow wireless tethering without being charged.
4. Backup/restore all Jailbreak apps without Itunes
5. Drag and drop Mp3's and MP4's without Itunes.
6. Backup/restore enitire phone without Itunes.
7. Open mp3's that are emailed to me.

Lets get this damn thread back on topic ok!

You guys went wayyy overboard. How is all this bickering answering his question or contributing. Fact of the matter is ansking a question about an iphone in a android forum is always going to get u the same idiots bashing apple with little to no use of the actuall device. Whether its open or not both platforms have advantages and disadvantages. And there really isn't that much u could do with one that u can't do with the other...really what more can a rooted phone do a jailbroken can't. Remember all root is reading and writing to the root of the device tethering u can do on both overclocking over rated.

Precisely. Everytime someone makes a thread asking about the iphone you get these 12 year old android fanboys who need a hero in their life, insulting apple. Geez, stay out of the thread if you don't want to contribute. It's pathetic. I really think these people somehow think they're going to get royalties or something by worshipping Google.

Even if he Googles "open source" the first definition of the phrase shows him to be wrong.

He thinks Android is closed because they don't follow the same process as Linux and Firefox.

Whatever. Czerdill has demonstrated the following... He ignores actual definitions of words and substitutes his own. He pretends that an entire website made by Google to allow community contributions to Android source code doesn't exist. And, then falls back to unrelated discussions to prove himself right in a totally different matter.

Not only that he brings up a discussion about speculating on the iPhone as proof that I'm wrong about this! Hey. I admitted I was wrong as far as the VZW iPhone went. So what.

But to say that Android is the opposite of "open source" is just plain foolish. I'm not hijacking the thread any longer.

when did i say android is closed? are you also just mad, because you can't contribute to Honeycomb? I have never once said Android is closed, and unlike you I wouldn't make such sweeping generalizations based on nothing (like you did with the iPhone). Android is very clearly open source, but it's not as open as everyone likes to think.

This started with some guy saying "Two words for ya: OPEN SOURCE!" and i was proving that it's not as open as you think where you can just go and do whatever you want to the OS. You can't. and you haven't proven otherwise.

When you prove to me that you can view the source code for Android versions that haven't been released yet, then I'll shut up. Until then you can shout and scream Open Source all you want...it won't make a difference.

My suggestion is if u want it buy it uoir not going to get any of the morons in here to give u a positive answer. I had every model iphone and recently went to verizon just cause I wanted to see if the grass was greener on the other side and trust me its the same shade of green
