Just polished my Droid... anyone else done this?

I just got through sanding mine a little bit on the edges outside the screen, to make it look more like that prototype Droid that was on eBay a while back. Took these pics on my Eris. It does have a pretty decent camera. :D

I dont have any polish on hand to make the metal shine right, so i am trying a few other things just to see what i can come up with [/ATTACH] i got impatient waiting on it to dry so you can see some major f ups but i think i like the idea

Nice that looks pretty cool, and it looks pretty even all the way around so you did a good masking job. What was the prototype droid all about? Ive never seen or heard about it... was the small chrome lip around the screen the only visual difference? Im suprised D&G or Armani or another designer hasnt come out with a gold or silver plated edition of the droid... ive seen other models on ebay go for unreal prices.

Haha yeah, thanks, I HAD to mask the screen or the sand paper would have tore it up good. :P
Umm you can Google search for Droid Prototype and see the pics... basically is has a Chrome bezel, like mine, and Silver buttons instead of gold. And much brighter capacitive buttons on the front.

Now the back : )

LOL Phone porn.

I expect "Yeah that's it." or "Oh that's nice!" to come out next

*cereal killer readjusts* haha j/k

In seriousness, Wonder if it'll affect the warranty? They can't "fix" it and then send it out "like-new" like they do when they warranty replace it.

It was stated that the "chin" was a necessary design element because the antenna needed to be exposed, at least in the front side, and not totally encased in a metal case due to the Faraday effect and it's effect on the RF performance of the phone.
anodized.

aka iPhone ;)

Just my opinion.... the painted look is not that cool, sort of cheezy. I wouldpd rather have a plastic snap on case case or just polish it. I think if I had to paint I would do the three stage chamealeon color change paint that way it has an effect or maybe even a good metallic shade...

Did the people that painted their phones at least strip off the "rubber" coating that starts peeling off the battery door or did u just paint over it?

yes i did strip off the ruber first, and it does look different in different lighting but thats hard to catch with a camera, its acrylic so it feels the exact same once its on there, as i had said in the previous post, I didnt have any silver polish on hand and was bored so i figured i would play around with a few ideas and see what i can come up with, i personally change the appearance of my phone atleast once every couple weeks and figured i would share how to do so, taking off the coating makes it a lot easier. I do agree that the green colored look is cheesy looking but thats the trial and error that these forums are all about right, :beer2: any more suggestions would be great, i can change just about anything on the phone to look different

wow, that is mixing it up! changing the scheme every two weeks is intense, if you do it that often please do the chamealon color changing paint one time and post pics! i would love to see it.

I did find some cool disassembly videos for the droid on youtube that helped me find out a little more. The piece above the battery door is plastic so it cannot be polished. I think it might be possible to replace it with a peice of aluminum as long as its cut to exact size so I will see about doing that.

Does anyone have any ideas on replacing the gold mesh/gold grill with a new custom vent/grill? That would be pretty neat... Im gonna dig around some more and see about replacing that plastic piece with aluminum or better yet carbon fiber :bling:

While stripping the panel i did discover that the pressure i applied to the surface of the battery cover accidentally bent it slightly inwards in the middle, this is not noticeable to the eye but great news for me, the battery cover now locks in place perfectly and doesn't slide off super easy like with the stock phones. I dont know if this was an issue for anyone else but it was for me
