[KERNEL] Kernel (deprimed_test) - Break It If You Can

Anybody know how Prime's doing, he hasn't posted here in almost 2 weeks. I don't follow twitter so not sure if he posting there. Hope all is going well with him.

Pleasantly surprised to see Con Kolivos' hand in kernel writing - I thought he had dropped out of kernel writing a couple o years back....

@ExpertonTech says this is the way to go for his builds, so I'm about to use the latest deprimed and have at it. Wish me luck!

If you read the FAQ CK wrote, he mentions that he had given up kernel writing, and that he had hoped to never return to it. The state of Linux kernels forced him to return though. I think it had to do with those maintaining the mainline kernel obsessing over scalability and optimizing the kernel for setups with thousands of CPUs. It performed alright for regular setups with 1-8 CPUs, but is too bloated to be optimal. CK wrote the scheduler as I understand it specifically for small scale use, which just so happens to be ideal for Android devices.

A week or two ago, I actually started using the stock CM kernel. Hate to say it, but it runs much better for my phone at least :-/. I tried several configs and voltages with deprimed and things just weren't nearly as stable as they are now. I dunno, just my $.02. I ran primed, reprimed, deprimed, it all, over the course of a couple months? I don't even know anymore.

What CM version are you running? I've been using NIGHLYs since i started trying out different kernels, and i've been on the latest de-primed the longest. Except for little issues such as MMS and video camera freezing i haven't experienced the issues i see a lot of people having. Even at that the updated nightlys have fixed many the bugs i've run into. About to test NIGHTLY 76 with both the stock kernel and latest deprimed because of the large number of changes from the last version. The next nightly seems to have a ton if changes in the works as well...

Pretty sure his job search is above posting here and on Twitter.

Just making an inquiry if anybody knew how things were going for him. Definitely with all going on in his life lately posting on forums at the bottom of ladder.

His kernel support aside, what Prime brings to the table is that which CVPS has not been doing for a while, namely debugging CM changes against the D1. I do understand why CVPCS has been away, and I do understand that he is back in the saddle so to speak so this is no slam on him. Any level of support he can give is appreciated (and donated to). But, for a while there it seemed as though all prime was doing was troubleshooting changes to the main CM platform, both to tweak his kernels and to help us figure out why stuff was "broke".

I started to see this happening and decided to jump back to 6.1.2 for a while. It has been kinda a rough stretch for the last few weeks or more. So, yes I too miss Prime, and wish him well.

I surely miss Prime too...his work kept me much more interested that I might've been otherwise.
I can only hope he is doing better and would like to see him resurface.

To me the forum is kinda boring without prime around, used to flash all the new ROMs that would be posted for og droid, but got kinda tiring & new ROMs slowing done for droid. As well as my phone just has best stability with PE ROMs and prime kernels. Used to enjoy seeing what he would come up with next. Well hope is going well for him, family and self first.

I hear you on that. All the little details he puts into his kernels and the explanations for them really makes him one of the best devs out there.

A mere hello to confirm that he is not dead or in jail would be nice. He hasn't posted on twitter for 3 weeks. I am actually kind of worried about him.

I sent Prime this email, hopefully he responds.

Hi "real name" (aka Prime/f1vefour),
This is one of your followers from droidforums and twitter, @Unzi24/dandroidx. I am checking to see if you are alive still. I am starting to get worried about you. I hope you have just found a job which happens to be keeping you busy. I assume you have a personal twitter account outside the android world, but a "I'm not dead" tweet or droidforums post would assure your fans that you are okay. Many of us feel like a friend has gone missing. I hope to hear from you, we miss you dude.
Regards,
