Yes, especially if you buy them from a distributor in a mint sealed vault right after release. China has copied them and even some double eagles.

Is that true? My husband buys graded silver and gold coins... so far, not from China, though? He would be very upset to hear they were fake!

The older/rarer coins get outed pretty quick. Any coin dealer knows how many should pop up for sale. But yes China has copied the 2 premium grading services encapsulation method. The serial numbers won't jive though. Lot of fake Morgan's now.

@lloydstrans I'll tell him... He has some Morgan's but he's had them a long time. With the China ones, are you telling me they found a way to counterfeit the plastic slab theyre in after they're graded? How do you know that what you're buying is real? You can ask to see the serial# on the one you're buying in the picture and check it out. But you don't get to verify what's in your actual package till it's paid for and at your doorstep. He was telling me something recently about why he didn't want to buy the ones from China but I don't remember exactly what he said. Are you a pretty experienced coin collector personally?

I amassed a complete set of Morgans and Peace dollars back in the mid-nineties. Complete sets of 1 oz. silver, gold and platinum eagles. The TV coin sellers messed up the numismatic market beyond repair. Prior to the Coin Vault and the ilk there was no such thing as a MS70, to my knowledge. Buy any vintage numismatic book printed prior to 2000. Best it ever got was a MS63 and very rarely a MS65. As experience goes I was told never buy a graded coin by a very experienced dealer. And I have purchased some beautiful coins in the raw.

Cool! Too bad my husband doesn't go on the forums... You'd have a lot to talk about. He doesn't buy anything on TV. He deals with a select group of coin and silver dealers on eBay who he's had good results with in the past. He loves collecting quality coins when we were first married and now I got him interested in buying silver and gold just in case the stock market craps out like it did in 2007-8
