Maxx owners: do/have you sold android phones you used to use or keep them?

After hearing all this it doesn't sound worth it to get 100-150 bucks for my old phone...but then again what are the chances one can access your info after taking so many pre cautions ya know...

Slim to none. Thats why I sell mine every year while the value is still high. The retail price on the Maxx is still $650. Probably sell mine for $450 here pretty soon. Case included.

so let me get this straight...my 2 year contract ends in january 2014. so if i sell my maxx for $450 in the future and use that money for a new phone, can i just switch phones on my contract? is the only thing you pay the early termination fee? and how much is it for the maxx, because on the receipt i think it said up to $200.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you sell your phone and buy another one at retail price, this has no impact on your contract. In other words, no additional fees. For example, if another phone comes out, you can sell your MAXX at let's say $450. That's perfectly fine. You will just need to come out of pocket for the remaining price of the new phone you want. If new phone is $649 and you sell your MAXX for $450, then you pay $199 in addition to your $450 to buy a new phone ($649) and that's it.

You ONLY pay an Early Termination Fee (ETF), which starts at $350 for smartphones, if you decide not to buy the phone at retail price and at the discounted 2-year contract price (breaking your 2-year contact to enter another one) instead.

This is partially why people buy phones on Craigslist and reason why iPhones go for $400+ on there. People know that their contract isn't up, so they'd either have to buy one at retail price, get it from someone on Craigslist cheaper than retail price, or pay a termination fee to break existing contract and enter another.

There is no early termination fee if you switch devices, only if you cancel your contract. Activating a different phone on your line doesn't cancel your contract. It doesn't cost you a thing. And with LTE SIM cards, all you have to do is put your SIM card in your new phone, and you're good to go. Quick and easy.

And, on a bit of a side note, while you might be able to get around $450 for a MAXX right now (probably a bit less actually), that won't last long. The prices on Android phones drop quickly. In six months, you'll be lucky to get $250 for the MAXX. If you want to get a decent return on your phones, you have to sell pretty quickly while they're still relatively new and in demand. Selling quickly also keeps you on the latest tech, which is fun.

What everyone else said. .. unless you bought your phone from Amazon or Wirefly. Just be aware that if you bought the phone through them (and possibly some others) they require you to keep the discounted phone that you bought from them on your phone number for six months or you get charged a $200 fee. With Costco, Best Buy, Verizon they could care less if you sell the phone or give it away. All they care about is that you keep a phone on that line for two years.

You are correct on not having to pay an EFT, however, you need to have a new phone to put on your line before you sell your current one. Not true about reselling the phone though. As long as the retail price stays around $600, you can easily get $400 for the Maxx. It doesn't matter to many people who don't need to have the latest and greatest phones if its a year old. The people who buy on Craigslist and Ebay are the ones who are content with a quality phone that may be a bit older, the ones selling are the ones who need the latest and greatest.

Is this true because of CDMA? I'm asking because I actually sold my 4s before I even went to Verizon to get my RAZR MAXX. I was phoneless for about 20 minutes. I only took my sim card with me. I had actually done this 2-3 times before, but only with AT&T.

Yeah, CDMA and GSM work differently in a lot of ways, including how they activate on your account. When you activate a CDMA device on your account, it's associated with your account until it's removed by placing another device on the account.

You might find someone on Craigslist to buy a year old MAXX for $400, but even that will be a tough sell. People who are looking for "a quality phone that may be a bit older" are also looking for a good deal. And to them, retail value means nothing when it comes to a used device. On the resale market, especially for CDMA devices, retail price only matters at the beginning when it's new. After being out for a bit, it doesn't matter if the retail price is $600, the resale value starts dropping significantly. Plus, after a year's time, Verizon isn't carrying the phone anymore, so retail prices mean even less. Take the Thunderbolt for instance, which is a little over a year old. Retailed for around $600. Brand new ones go for a couple hundred dollars on eBay regularly, and used ones for under $100. Or look at something as recent as the Rezound or the Galaxy Nexus. Both of those are just 6-7 months old, and are great devices. You can find used ones for around $200 or less in a lot of places. It's all about supply and demand - after a few months (and especially after a year), there's a large supply of used phones of a particular model and low demand because better things are out, so the prices drop. Beyond just having the Apple name on it, the iPhone holds its value much longer because new versions are only released every year, whereas with Android phones, there's seemingly something better every couple of weeks.

So, you can't bank on making much trying to sell a year-old Android phone. You might get lucky on Craigslist if the buyer doesn't know anything about the value of used smartphones, but in general, they aren't worth very much, regardless of retail price.

Oh ok. Glad you mentioned that. After reading someone else was going to sell their maxx for $400 on CL once the new one comes out, that's the first thing I thought about... Just selling my phone and then heading to Verizon afterwards... So that being said, it seems like I might end up having to buy a cheap phone just to hold the line while I make my way to Verizon?

If you're looking to sell your old phone before buying your new one, that would be the best route to take. That will deactivate the device you're looking to sell from your line.

Personally, I get the new phone (or new to me as the case may be with a slightly used one) first, activate it, try it, and then after I decide if I like it enough to keep it for awhile, I'll sell the older one. That way there's no need for a cheap back up phone (although I do have one in the Palm Pixi Plus that I purchased from Amazon brand new for $30). I know a process like that isn't feasible for everyone, but since I pretty much only make purchases with a credit card and know how to make a sale on the old phone pretty quickly, it works in the same way for me that selling first and putting the money towards the new phone does for others.

All I know is I have never had to sell a phone for less than $350. That was the Evo 3D cause no one wanted it. It was much easier to sell the Evo 4G. why would you sell a phone that retails over $600 for $200? Maybe your area is not good for reselling.

The most I have ever paid for a phone is $200...which happened to be my Maxx. Only bought 2 used... one years ago to replace a water damaged phone (went for a dive in the pool.. .now my phones get put in a ziplock freezer bag around the pool) and the incredible with extended battery, otterbox and screen protectors off CL last year for $150 (he originally wanted $250 but it wouldn't sell).
