I wouldn't doubt this at all. The key here is simple: toggle 4G off when not in use to avoid background apps draining the battery and whatnot and use wifi whenever possible.

That's not a lot of usage to have the phone drained to 61% in only 7 or so hours.
Perhaps you should look at the attachments again. Nowhere does it say 7 hours. Are you crazy or just blatantly lying? You Bolt haters are insane. LOOK AT THE PHOTO. IT CLEARLY SAYS 13 HRS. 13 hrs of light and medium usage throughout the day/afternoon and it's only drained 40%? So my phone can last more than a whole day on a single charge with light-med use. I feel confident I can easily get 8-12 hrs of heavy use. This'll be my next test.

Look, if you don't like the Bolt, it's cool. Throw it away, stomp on it, give it to me, eat it, I don't care. Just stop saying the battery life is horrible when you're running it like a slave horse all day long. That is typical of everything.
Chill out. I own the Thunderbolt. It's the only phone giving you talk and data at the same time. I want to make it work. At the same time, we have to face facts.

I use this phone for emails like people do a blackberry. I do some web surfing during the day, not much, but also need to look up addresses on Google maps, etc. If you have an office where you work, you can keep the phone plugged in when in the office and it should be fine for short trips, 3-4 hours.

Unfortunately the battery life is much worse than most smartphones as is. HTC made several mistakes with this phone, the spec for internal storage is one and, more importantly, releasing it with this battery which is smaller than the old EVO. It seems like HTC underpowers its phones with teaser batteries and I have no idea who is responsible. Even their dual core processor will apparently have about 15% less battery capacity than the Motorola.

I don't know what "light" or "medium" usage is to you but I've talked on the phone for an hour and used 4G for about 45 minutes and I'm at 40% after about 7 hours. Those numbers are poor, even for a smartphone. I highly doubt you'll be able to get 8-12 hours of "heavy use" -- even the rep I spoke to in the store today conceded they have been getting the same complaints and have been selling the extended battery. I'm just being realistic in helping others understand what the expectations are.

I had to get an extended battery for my Incredible. The standard battery didn't cut it. On the bright side with the TB, many of the processes go so much faster that it seems to burn much less battery, but there is a drop to 50% after a few hours making me a little worried about losing the phone. The extended battery is not as huge as it looks in pictures. I just cut the cool plastic case and it fits rather nicely with the extended battery, which is a few millimeters past the extended case thickness on the top and bottom. It makes the phone certainly heavier and much less sleek although it is "manageable."

What I hope is that enough people mention this to VZW and all of us adopters should get some discount. The spec rating on the site is nowhere near real world performance. Considering that VZW claims to perform rigorous testing of their phones, it's a rather mediocre result here. Hopefully we as consumers can keep them honest here and feeling the pressure to make good on a number of mistakes. We just need to manage our own expectations properly.

Turning off all of those things is limiting... Its an extra step that limits my phones ability that I shouldn't have to do. I can run my iPhone literally all day without disabling a bunch of things. I need to charge the TB 2 times daily for the same amount of use. I have already done everything needed for the battery to calibrate. I'm a long tenured Android user, all the way back to the Dream, and the battery life has never been good, but this is ridiculous. My D1 last far longer with heavy heavy usage, and that's with a 14 month old battery!!!!!

Turning off those options is not limiting it, it's called using common sense. Why am I going to run GPS when I don't need it? Why am I going to leave Bluetooth running when I don't need it? This adds another vulnerability to your phone anyway, allowing someone with the know-how to hack your phone via BT. It's not like toggling these options takes me longer than 10 seconds or forces me to go through a bunch of menus. I merely flick the screen, press a button, and voila -- instant toggle. Again, this is obviously not limiting the phone because if I need to use GPS, BT, etc., then I merely toggle it on and presto -- instant toggle.

If you want to leave battery-draining options running that would kill any battery, then so be it. You're going to be charging two times a day. This is not a battery issue, this is a user issue.

If you are smart with your smartphone, it's going to last. Simple as that.

On a related note, I bump charged my phone this morning while getting ready for work. I walked out the door with a full bump charge. I lightly used my phone throughout the day due to work. I spoke on the phone, sent some texts, used 3G a few times, etc. About 4 hours ago, I started using it a little more heavier for texting, talking, and wifi. Attached are some pics I just took with my Droid within the last 10 minutes.

True, but if you're a high roller running around making multi million dollar business deals, you don't have time or you simply forget to turn those options ON/OFF all the time. Why can't they make a phone that lasts 1 day while we leave ON our GPS/BT/WiFi, surf, check email, make phone calls? Oh, they do, it's called the iPhone.

"If Apple can do it, Droid can do it better" isn't this why we are all Droid owners?

Forget 3D screens, forget dual core, forget all that fancy stuff. Just give me a basic phone I can use and leave my GPS on, WiFi, BT, surf web, make calls and check email for 1 full day without charging and I will pay $300 for it (with an upgrade), $700 w/out upgrade.:icon_ banana:

I had Gtalk on by accident - it drained the phone 10-15% per hour. This might be of assistance to you about the battery. I'm going to get the extended because I need messenger to communicate with some people and don't want to worry excessively about the battery. If this is important to you, consider the extended otherwise use more texts (which may cost you too instead of using it for a battery.)

LOL!!!! The problem is more HTC. For reasons unexplained, they keep underpowering their phones, perhaps hoping to upsell everyone to an extended battery. I'm recommending to most to buy Motorola phones if they can stand Blur (I hate it but it's not horrible). They have been powering their phones with much more powerful batteries than HTC.

Here's one that's even more powerful for a little less money.
New Trent iCruiser IMP1000 11000mAh External Battery Pack and Charger

Found it on Amazon for $80. Many options for when you're away from a power source. Personally, I'm getting one of these cool hats and rewiring it for my mini-USB.:icon_ banana:

Do you have the radiation test rusults from having one of those things on your head all the time? I think it causes brain damage if you leave it on too long. Also, what if you live in Seattle, WA and there's hardly ever any sun around?

For the first time I can realistically see myself returning this phone. You guys have legitimate gripes, and I have a 2 week guarantee with a company that I have been loyal to for 7 years +.

Keep telling me why I should give up on the Thunderbolt. I will copy, paste & print these gripes out if and when I decide to return it.

You guys have bummed me out, but made me face reality. I didn't get this phone cheaply and if I pay top dollar I want top results.

That's too much work having to turn off /turn on/turn off /turn on. Why can't the phone do this for us automatically? These damn phones do almost everything these days, but they can't figure out how to turn all those unused features off automatically so we can save batteries usage? Like a screensaver or sleep mode on a computer.

I think if they released it sooner, they wouldn't have as many people complaining, but with all the delays (although they never said it would be released February) and the people from reading this forum the last 2 months and their expectations (it's almost like a cult following)...we are just a bit disappointed. It's like going to a busy busy restaurant and waiting 1 hour to get a seat, then you finally get a seat, order the food and the food tastes worst than McDonalds you had the night before.

I would probably still get this phone once Costo starts stocking them, but it depends on if the other competitors release their newer Droids.

I'm loving this phone. Yeah the battery is rough but with a little work I should be able to manage.

No complaints here on my end.

Nahh... I just think they goofed with this phone. It's a momentary intro before all the dual core Droids come out and has specs that are totally wrong and anyone with a modicum of tech savvy could have provided correctly. Not sure whose fault this is - HTC or VZW. Expectations were high and they put a tiny battery in the phone and told everyone that 8GB of internal storage was coming with the phone, just like the Incredible. No HDMI out either in addition to no 1080 recording... was a surprise.

It's certainly the best phone out right now for sure. I like the kickstand way more than I thought I would. I love the dual data and voice. The only envy I'd have is if the Moto dual cores can reasonably do a full day's worth of medium to slightly heavy usage which the TB can't do. Otherwise, I'd probably say I'm somewhat satisfied because I got my phone at a significant discount with a 1 year deal. We'll see if the 4G rolls over. ;) Then we'll see how happy I am, lol!

Most of these toggle issues could be solved by a liberal application of tasker.

Honestly, I was VERY hesitant to grab the TB and pass on my very reliable DX which I nabbed when it was released and have loved there since.

I am very glad I did. Phone is zippier all around, camera is better, always hated the hard keys on the X and around love the look and feel of the TB.

Battery life has certainly not been up to par with my X, that with the extended battery, ROM and tweaking I could get 15+ hours out of easily.....but that will change...
