Mobile Defense vs Wave Secure

For the people at wavesecure...

Could you guys change the way users log into your wavesecure web application by not using the cell phone number as the login id? That is a privacy issue. Change it to a standard username or something other than the phone number. That's so old school and outdated. I'm a UI developer and I would never have any of my customers use our products that required them to use their phone number as the user id. Btw, I already added it to the feedback page.

Thank you kindly.

I played around with Mobile Defense a bunch today and really like it. If your phone is rooted, then you can install it using ADB as a system service. Aside from not showing up in your app tray and being extra hard to kill (ie, you must use ADB/Terminal to uninstall it), installing with root lets you remotely turn on GPS. Being able to turn on GPS remotely is a huge plus to me since I always leave it off to conserve battery.

I also use Handcent SMS, so you can set a contact for Mobile Defense then add it to your blacklist so there is no notification of you remotely activating the program. The send alert is nice and loud, and allows you to add txt to it, like "I'm standing behind you, give me my goddamned phone." or "Punch to head imminent..." It will also allow you to set a 4-digit pin for the audio alarm.

The lock feature is a little finicky to setup, I didn't figure it out until I went to the website and found a FAQ about it. Basically, you have to set the pattern, then use the website to unlock it, and then you're good to go.

I'd love remote software that lets me get audio/video feed from the phone. Maybe one day.

Hi s-one,
Thank you for your feedback.

There are several reasons why we decided on using the cell phone number as the login. Mobile number is unique and users will definitely not forget their own number. This makes it a lot easier for them.

Also, on some WaveSecure builds on other platforms, the activation process doesn't even require the user to enter the mobile number (it will be used automatically).

That said, we are exploring the possibility of using email addresses in future.

Thanks,

Cheewee, yet another person that would love to have this. :) Hope your devs are listening. As stated on previous page. I'd PAY for this service.

I have the same problem where WS is locating my phone blocks away. I'm outside the radius it is predicting it to be located within.

I have GPS off, but it doesn't appear to be triangulating, simply pinging back the current tower. Seems i'm getting signal from that tower outside of the projected range.
How far off is it? I've had triangulation off by 2100m or more, depending on tower density.

Speaking of stealing, if I were to steal someone's smartphone, the first thing I would do is a factory reset. I'd do it as quickly as possible and then just sell it on ebay. So if someone were to steal your phone, I wouldn't doubt it if it would be on eBay before you even realized someone stole it. Let alone before you have a chance to "wipe" or lock your phone...
I really don't understand why you (or anyone, for that matter) would assume that a thief would think the way you think. If the thieves that stole my stuff in the past were smart then they wouldn't have smashed my car's window, failed to steal the stereo and ended up stealing used motor oil.

There are plenty of dumb thief stories out there if you bother to look around. You do have a point in that it doesn't take much to remove a battery but every added layer of protection is beneficial. If nothing else, I'd like to have a shot at not handing my data over.

Thanks for your response. I certainly understand the reason for using the phone number. I'm a developer myself. But as I mentioned its the wrong unique identifier due to privacy issues and the average user would not realize this. You can use email addresses, username id's etc.. you folks at WaveSecure will just have to take the steps in restructuring your forms, code and db. Using the users phone number is just wrong.. a big no-no. :) Looking forward to the email address logins.

Kind regards

Hi bbeyu,
I searched through the support request emails. Did you send a support request as "E"? I quote:-

Hi there

As directed by Cheewee, I am contacting support re: problem below.

I installed WS on my Milestone, and added 3 buddies during the prelim. registration/setup after install. Then I decided to delete 2 of them and remain 1 for testing purpose. However, I noticed then the 3 names still appear on the 'Settings' sections on the Website when my phone is currently showing 1 person on my buddy list?? pls fix asap as there doesnt seem to be a way to edit Settings on the Website?! Plus, if I have to try editing/uninstall/reinstall on my phone, it will end up repetitively bugging my buddies since you guys have no button for just TESTING but each time it bugs ppl w/SMS alert.

According to Cheewee, the problem may just be the website not reflecting the change of buddy list in the Setting section, however.....I noticed it not!

'But that was the problem occured yesterday, I have already deleted the other 2 buddies on my phone but when i did a test lock on the website, the SMS still sent to all 3 of my buddies. That was why I then double checked my settings on the website and found out it still showing 3 instead of 1 buddy. Now I am scare to run any test again fearing my mates will all run away fm me ~ '

thx
E

Our support replied with the following:-

Hi E.

The buddy numbers on the server should get updated when you delete a buddy from the phone. Did you have a data connection available on the phone when you deleted the additional buddies?

When sending a lock from the website your buddies should not be sent any SMS. They receive a text message only when a new SIM is inserted in your phone (and when they are added to the buddy list). Can you let me know what text message did they receive when you send the lock from the server?

For testing, if you want, you can set your own number as the buddy number. That way you wouldn't disturb any of your friends with unwanted text messages from WaveSecure.

Regards,
Prashast

Hope that helps.

Thanks,

I installed Wave Secure. Withing two hours, it sucked my battery dry and made the phone very hot. I have uninstalled it and will rely on Mobile Defense. Too bad, because Wave Secure offers so much more protection.

Sorry, but that makes no sense, whatsoever. If you're going to post such a claim when no one else seems to have experienced it, you at least owe the developer a detailed description of the problem.

Agreed, I have it installed and have never once had that problem... my guess is it's something else or a weird conflict with something else.

I actually have both Wave Defense and Mobile secure installed and have never had an issue, or battery loss or performance hit... they seem to play perfectly together.

Wave Secure problem

In fact, I did email wave secure as instructed from their website. The message was as follows:

I downloaded and installed your program. Within a couple of hours, the battery was substantially drained and the phone got very hot to the touch. I had to uninstall the program. Is the short battery life and heat normal? How about the charges for international texting I have read about. If these problems can be solved, I would even pay for your program as it has so much more security than Mobile Defense.

It was sent to '[email protected]' yesterday, 3/19. I have not yet had a reply. Hopefully, I will get the reply either by email or on this forum shortly.

Just installed and activated Wavesecure. Backed up all my data and did a location test and it was pretty close for only being able to use cell towers. Nice to have a little additional piece of mind.
