Mother Of All Android Malware Has Arrived: Roots Phone, Steals Data, Opens Backdoor.

Are we really that surprised? It was only a matter of time... Virus makers program viruses mostly for the most popular OS. This is why Windows has a lot more viruses than Mac. Why? Because why write a virus for 10% of the population? I'm not surprised. Maybe what surprises me the most is how long it took...

You couldn't resist taking the jab at apple, could you? lol I'm sure these things have been around for a while. And i'm sure when you read about it it will be downplayed, because it always is. Bottom line when you step into something like android and you are downloading apps you have to be weary. It's a little worse than on a windows based computer because most android smartphone users aren't expecting it to happen. Most users don't look at their smartphone like a computer. Android powered devices are probably the BEST platform to attack to gather user information and data. Computer users tho many(most) are easily susceptible to viruses and such they can usually tell when something is up. Google needs to focus more attention on this, and I'm sure will take steps to ensure data safety or be forced to ensure data safety.

The lookout blog has a little more information, including the three dev names under which the 50 infected apps appeared in the market.

If you have an app with a similar name to those mentioned in the article, don't panic. If you installed the app from the original dev, you're okay. The infected apps were stolen, altered, and listed on the Market under a different developer name. Some legit apps have the same name as the malicious ones mentioned in the above article. For example, there are a few apps called "Scientific Calculator" in the market. I've had one by dev Quartic Software on my phone for about a year.

If you were already rooted would you have had a message pop up from super user that these malware apps were requesting su permission or would the app be able to get around requesting permission?

What is more interesting to me from that article is that Google has access to a user's phone and is able to remove, and i assume modify or add or change, code/apps/etc. without notification or consent, If what I interpeted from "as well as remotely removing them from users devices" is correct.

Very long sentence

As far as I know, apps can only be automatically updated if you have specifically selected that option for that particular app, during an update of that app.

Apps will only auto update if no changes to the permisions it needs change. If poeple can't read the permissions needed, they are partly at fault.

That's a damn good question!

I think it's interesting that it's gone from 21 to 50. By tonight it will be 100.

Look, if you want to put antivirus on your phone do it. But don't hand me that crock of dog dew dew about it not affecting performance. I'm confident the apps I have on my phone are safe.

the people who downloaded those ridiculous apps deserve it..."Screaming sexy japanese girls"??, "hilton sex sound"?...how...dumb.

That's nuts. Anyone downloading those deserve what they get. But the fact is they are also stealing good apps. Like Guitar Solo and calling it Super Guitar Solo. As a musician I'm always on the lookout for new music apps for my Droid X. But I'm installing Lookout. Better be safe than sorry.
