Mother Of All Android Malware Has Arrived: Roots Phone, Steals Data, Opens Backdoor.

that this happened is a real shame. it demonstrates that google is not administering the market properly. is it not enough that the number of apps available in the market are several orders of magnitude less than the app store, and yet the app store manages to keep malware out ? i don't agree with apple's 'persona' in what they allow or disallow in the app store and on their hardware, but it has successfully kept their store free of malicious apps.

this is an absolute letdown from the perspective of a platform that is based off the linux kernel as an act of secure, solid and reliable phoning/computing.

apple has had exposed customers to exploits with gaping holes in it's software in the past. but let it get to this point i have not yet seen that happen.

I download the Music Box app and uninstalled it after reading this. Would a factory reset get rid of the anything if there was something? Just want to make sure I'm 100% safe.

The real question is, what can users do to protect themselves from this happening to their Android device.

Pay attentions to what you install....It's the same as a PC.
Don't download and install everything that looks cool....

Good advice.

You also don't have to be the first kid on the block to try everything. Wait for reviews. I don't know how long these "stolen" apps have been on the market for but fortunately for the community there are some folks out there who poke sticks at everything and discovered this. I can understand the market being open, but also could see some of the profits from the market being spent on a Google team (for the Google Market) that spends time reviewing the code of apps being released. All it would take would be one market to do this and then all the other markets would have to follow suite if they wanted to be known as a safe location to grab apps from. This way if you grabbed any app that had been out for a month or so you could be reasonably sure it was safe.

The article says for days here:

Maximum PC | Google Yanks 21 Trojan Infected Apps from Android Market

...and i finally found that i could get a 30-day trial of Kaspersky :) ... sue me. I do exercise caution, but stuff happens. As far as AV software goes, Kaspersky (on the PC) is tops in my personal and professional opinion (out of stuff that you can get from the store). I'm going to give it the 30 day trial and see how my phone is effected (for better or worse), then make the decision if i want to drop the money on it. I hate the price tag, but I enjoy the fact that I'm running Kaspersky (it has a lot of great features - yes that can be found else where, but again, this is a company I trust) - features like via a txt message sent to your phone (containing "your special code" can lock your phone, get the gps coords, etc.. etc..).

Quite a few ppl mentioned they'd prefer to live in the great walled off garden (or whatever). I can't help but relate that to a police state vs. freedom of choice. I like my freedom of choice :) (yes, there's some nasty stuff that comes with it, but i still have my freedom)...okay, that's all :)

I use Trend Micro mobile essentials. Scans for malware. Watches running apps for suspicious activity. Also has call and message filtering/logging. I do not have any of the listed apps installed, so I don't know for sure if it works, but I was real surprised how little battery this app consumes. Renewable annual subscription. Just my$.02.

Surprises me we haven't seen a suggestion to even see if you're infected, let alone some type of patch.

Um...there is. Go to the link on OP. Xda released a quick and easy fix. Read the updates.

I just read the thread and realized that I used to have one of those apps installed on my unrooted D2....I have rooted since and no longer have them but that is scary. What makes it worse....I HAD lookout and Wavesecure both installed at the time.

Anti virus can't protect against an unknow, thats why those have been pointless all along. Maybe if they update to protect against these then they would be worth having on your phone.
