"Official" Beautiful Widgets Skinning Thread

When I click to download a skin, it says "downloading", then after 2 seconds, that pop-up disappears. I go to see my downloaded skin list on the Installed Skin tab, there is nothing.

I go to Astro to see what was added to my SD card, and all I see is a new folder with the name of the skin (under \skin\). If I try to download a different skin, that folder's name is replaced with the most recent download attempt (instead of additional folders being created).

I have a Nexus One.

Edit: I'm guessing the server is down, because LevelUp Studio's website is also down.

Hey GoofyG28, yeah I just got word from Tama (the dev) that his Sql server is down and that he's looking into it.

Update: He's rebooting his server so hopefully things will be back up shortly.

^ haha, he should of called me, I'm a SQL Server DBA by day :)

You shouldn't have said that, my company E-commerce site has a decent sized dedicated SQL server with over 40,000 detailed products/details.. If I ever get stuck on a SQL issue you may get some "off topic" PMs :-)

Back on topic, I just checked and the BW skin server seems to be working OK now.

I looked into skinning pure cal agenda, but so far no luck because of how it handles scaling.

I just put my SD card in my computer and place the extracted file in Data/Beautiful Widgets/Skins and then it will show up in Installed Skins

how do I use this skin my droid? I can DL directly from my droid?

I tend to do that because I'm too lazy to connect my droid to the pc. Come to here, click the zip and it downloads to the download directory. I use Astro, free app from the Market, and long-press the file, edit, move. Then navigate to the skins directory. menu-key or top nav bar lets me click edit-paste. Now the file has been moved. Next I long-press the file again and extract. Following that I delete and macOS folder it might have also dumped in the skins directory.

Sometimes I''ll navigate the forums with my droid, other times I'll grab the link and email it to myself and get it that way by using email link from the phone.

My apologies if this has been covered somewhere in the last 65+ pages of this thread. (I did make an effort to find another reference; really I did.)

I finally dl'ed Beautiful Widgets and began looking at the wealth of skins available. Trouble is that with a few exceptions, I cannot determine which skins are "transparent" and which are "opaque." Aesthetically, I prefer the former for my phone and it's a major PITA to download and try one skin after another to see if my background shows through the BW "home" or "smaller home."

This is further complicated by the fact that (I believe) I cannot tell which skin I currently have in place or easily (without using a file manager) delete or "re-file" skins I've downloaded and found wanting.

When the number of available skins is 10 or fewer, these are minor problems. When the number is 50+, well, you get the idea.

So, this is simply a plea for a more consumer friendly identification system for individual skins and features that allow a user to manage a stack of skins more easily.

P.S. Sorry for the ignorance on this point, but I understand the term "transparent." I initially believed that "naked" might well be a synonym, indicating a transparent skin. But I believe I've found that some skins that claim to be "naked" are "opaque."

P.P.S. None of the comments above should be taken to be a criticism of the BW app/widgets. It/they are great. Just hope to see the app move toward a more consumer-friendly state as it progresses.

I think overall everyone has done a good job at denoting the naked or transparent skins, but your post is a good reminder to try and do even better.

In a perfect world everyone would use the same wallpaper or just a black wallpaper, but that is not realistic as some use wallpapers that they feel look the best with the particular skin.
