Palm Users Who Changed to Droid?

Have not switched yet but I am considering it. The main thing I like about the Palm is the Sync with Outlook and I have yet to find a phone without the Palm platform that will do this. I tried the Pre but it was only one way and did not have all of the apps. Is there an app that makes it possible to sync to outlook contacts, calendar, memos and tasks? (2 way sunc)

Outlook will sync with Google, contacts, calendar and even email accounts. I thought I would miss Palm's Outlook sync - not at all! I love syncing with Google from any computer and keeping them all current. Do a search on synching with Google or go into Google and read about it... it made the transition from Palm to Android a much happier experience - and no cables! :icon_ banana:

Well not exactly.

As far as I have been able to tell it does the calender flawlessly but as far as the others I have found it doesnt sync memos and tasks.

But I really never used those functions so I don't care much. And having an OTA sync of my calender every 2 hours without worrying about my calender is WAY better. I add something to the Droid and it's already on Outlook when I get home.

You're right - but I never use them either, whcih is why I forgot about them! But otherwise I just am so much happier with syncing to The Cloud than with having to remember to sync individual computers with my phone/pda!

Searching for info on the Droid

Thank goodness there's this forum. I'm also a die-hard Palm user. Also a user from the Handspring days.

Okay so, I started reading every post but, good grief... there are 12 or so pages of them so, I didn't get through them all. So, please forgive me if this has already been hashed out.

For the life of me, I CANNOT find if there's a way to search and find data on the droid (specifically in my contacts) like I used to with all my Palm devices. For example, I entered a restaurant a few weeks ago that I wanted to remember to bring my wife to on a date. Well, later I forgot the name of the restaurant but remembered it was in San Francisco. So, like on the Palm, I wanted to look for the restaurant by searching with the text San Francisco. NO CHANCE! Or, am I doing something wrong? This was one of the handiest tools (IMHO) on the Palm.

I also put information in the NOTES section in my contacts in order to search for them but, to no avail, I can't find how to make this work on the Droid.

I still have a couple of neoprene cases with the Handspring logo on them...! :)

Search in the Market for Power Search. It solved that problem for me - it's a fine app that works very well!

lowtech, YOU, my friend, are DA BOMB!!!!! As well as the app you suggested.

THIS is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! You can find almost ANYTHING if it resides on your Droid. Seriously - this APP should come standard on the Droid, it's so FREEKIN' useful...
My Droid is now complete!! :icon_ banana:

Love being DA BOMB!! and delighted to help. That's the value of these fantastic forums... pass it on! (Did you find that restaurant?)

Had a Treo 750W for a couple of years and then tried some other phones - the Blackberry Storm <horrible brick> and then got a Pre. Loved the Pre but signal stunk from Sprint. Apps were also very limited & wanted a bigger keyboard.

Have had the Moto Droid for 2 weeks tomorrow and LOVE IT. The apps make the device. If you think of a limitation of the phone, search for an app to fix it and it is there.

Sold the Pre on e-bay and paid for my Droid. :motdroidvert:

Yes, thanks to you, and Power Search, I did. :) Thanks again...

Being a convert from Palm OS (Treo = latest use), I'm used to finding every/anything from a simple contextual search. (i.e. What was the name of that person [who I saved in my contacts] who called about the motorcycle I have for sale in the local paper [I know, archaic]. WAIT!! I DO remember the last four digits of their phone number was 1234) AHA, Try to do a magnifying glass search on your Droid for that!! (Go ahead, search for a phone number, using the last four digits, you KNOW you have in your contact list) You won't get anywhere (productive, at least)!

Alas... Power Search to the rescue!

I've recently installed GDocs Notepad (to add the notes I've had in my MS Outlook Notes folder) and am trying to figure out how to make it search that content also. I see in the preferences 'Phone Applications' section Search OI Notepad, AKNotepad, Notepad but, although they are all checked, none of them are returning data from my GDocs Notepad yet. Hmmm. Any tips from anybody? lowtech, any hints?

From DA BOMB to bombed  ...I am looking for a really efficient app for this too... I am "auditioning" Evernote, but so far I am not too thrilled with that- the copy/paste from emails is not working on my Eris so It is useless for me - unless I am missing something...?

No, definately not bombed... I downloaded OI Notepad lastnight and found it to work nicely with Power Search. Might need to add all my notes manually but, at least they'll be searchable once done. They say you can import from the SD card so, perhaps I can dump them on the card while the Droid is teathered to my PC via USB, then use the import feature - gotta do some testing here.

Overall, these apps have improved my opinion of the Driod tenfold! It's gone from a toy to an actuall business tool in one day.

Oh I do agree - it is a fine tool, needing only some time to find the right apps for the job(s). Speaking of which, I have really abandoned Outlook for my Calendar and Contacts altogether. I now sync with Google for all of that, plus my pop3 emails, which is a good backup. I hated syncing Outlook to the Palm - always issues it seemed... With Google I can access everything from any computer and the Eris... lovely! This has converted me to a (provisional) fan of Google, and certainly of Android. (And there's no fan like a convert! :))
