I did a factory reset...synced Googole ONLY and didn't even open the backup assistant for Verizon...not only do I NOT have duplicates when I assign ringtones to invidual people it actually works !
1. Export contacts to SD card.
1a. Import by emailing that file on SD card to yourself.
2. Delete all contacts on phone.
3. Gmail import feature and merge feature to get rid of duplicates.
4. Sync Gmail/Google account.
All contacts will then be Google based and duplicates should have been properly merged by Gmail.
One at a time or remove all accounts.
Hhhmmmmm....there might be a batch erase looking into it now....
Ouchers: "Note: At this time multiple contact selection is not supported."
One at a time it is unless factory reset...ugh.
Not a perfect solution but you could just turn off visibility of any non Google contacts
1. Open contacts app.
2. Hit main bottom left button.
3. Hit display options.
4. Make sure only Google contacts are visible in those settings.
Won't let me delete the Gmail account that required a wipe of the phone.
Deleted the outlook account I had imported.
I don't know how to delete the Phone account. I think I accidentally re-enabled the stupid thing since hitting it and I don't recall how to turn it off. I don't think there are any contacts in that account anyway.
I manually deleted 220 contacts. Then I sync'd it and they all deleted from my Gmail account.
Then I imported the backed up file from the SD card and it restored them to Gmail. I then went to my phone and made sure it was cleared out and hit sync.
And I just spent another hour merging people who I had accidentally entered under different names or some with names and emails and no phone numbers. Now it's set up just right.
I also posted a thread how to turn off Backup Assistant.
