That's a smart plan. They could get a chance to hold it first and see if the form factor is a problem and, if not, get both the Maxx and double data for just $35 extra.
I have the unlimited plan, but I have never used 2GB. I use wifi almost everywhere. It's nice to have though. I would agree with the suggestion "get the Razr and double data then trade in for the Maxx". I have never needed more battery, but I would choose the Maxx if I were buyimg a phone today.

I used to use wifi always then my friend said you pay for the data and have unlimited why not use it? So I now always use it when I can. I'm getting 38mbps download and 21mbps upload. My wifi gets half of each
price drops on the 23rd when the new phones are released, price match drop guaranteed for 14 days... Get it while you can get the double data, decide if the battery life works for you. Get the price difference matched on the 23rd, trade up for $35 if needed.

Yeah wifi vs 4g that's a no brainier ... these 4g speeds smoke my 5mbps cable provider .. (they offer a 50mbps now but its capped at 50gigs a month @ .50 for each gig over, I average 180gig a month at home bringing my overage charges up to $80 a month) unlimited 4g hotspots would be way cheaper ..
Oops I strayed off...
posted tomorrow using the space time continuum app on my D1...
RAZR and double data hands down. RAZR gets pretty good battery life and it's $100.00 cheaper. I personally do not think the MAXX is worth the extra 100 dolla bill when you get the same great device (less some battery life) in the original RAZR.
From what I have read, the Razr and the Maxx will be $299 from Verizon and in my case both will probably be $249 after my $50.00. Where are you finding the Razr as 100 bucks less than the Maxx?
