RE: HOW TO: Convert DVDs and Videos for use with Droid

  • Thread starter Thread starter dvdcatalyst

I've ripped over 300 movies now with DVDCatalyst, and only found three that gave me problems. Two of them ended the rip prematurely, and one just errors out with memory errors on start. Great product....and believe me, I own SEVERAL rippers from my quest to find a great one like this!

Any plans for a Blu-Ray version?

Hi Bob,

Glad to hear you enjoy DVD Cat. Maybe PM/Email me the titles of the DVDs, and I'll see if I can figure out why they are not working properly.

As for bluray, yes, but no development progress on this yet. The only reliable method to do something with these is to use AnyDVD HD, which kinda defeats anything I would do, because people whould have to pay $60 for that first, and then something for BluCat (or whatever name it will get). There are some free methods, but due to the constant changes in the bluray format, (I bet those early adopters just love that their $1500 Bluray drive from 2 years ago wont play all the stuff on the new releases) nothing is fully reliable. Once it's a bit more ironed our, I'm sure to do something with bluray.
DVDCat does handle those bluray RIPS (MKV) though :)

ok finally got my computer up and running again... fack...

check disk got stuck at 1% (I guess I should have uninstalled another slysoft program before installing Anydvd because my registry got FUBAR)
did a system restore
Kaspersky went wonky on me
got AnyDvd up and running

DvdCatalyst is working great.

but on to my question.... what does AnyDvd have to do with DvdCatalyst? do they work in-cahoots or do I need to RIP with AnyDvd then DvdCatalyst?

Thanks, and will do. I'll give them one more try myself, and make good notes for you of exactly where they fail, then PM the titles and errors to you. There are only three.

Glad to hear there's a Bluray ripper in our future. I do have AnyDVD HD already, and understand exactly where you're coming from there.

AnyDVD helps with encryption on DVDs. Usually you will not need to use AnyDVD with DVDCatalyst as DVDCatalyst does that by itself.

Some DVDs have a more severe protection than others. While DVDCat can handle most of them, AnyDVD does this better. It works as a layer between the DVD drive and a program (such as DVDcat) that accesses the DVD. It's transparent, and for DVD tools, the DVD appears unprotected, region free. All the problems the DVD protection can cause are redirected by AnyDVD to make things work.

Thank you for your help. Sometimes it feels like I'm being emailed/messaged to death :)

I'm actually looking at a bluray guide at this very moment to troubleshoot an issue with someones home-made blurayrips. I just glanced over it (its getting late) and it seems like a pain to do all these steps. I might whip up something to make this a little friendlier. No promises though. If someone has some bluray guides, email them to me, and I'll see what I can do.

Again, no promises. I'm working on both an update for dvdcat AND trying to get the mp4 server out there as well.

I used Anydvd couple years ago when I was "backing up" dvd's like crazy but when my computer crashed and we got the new laptop, plus blu-Ray , and canceled netflix. I kinda gave up on the burning dvd's.

how do you get the lips and sound to be in sync in the movies. Mine are always a second off and it's irritating.

What program are you using to convert your movies? Everything I tried was off. DVD Catalyst is the first program I used that I didn't get that problem.

Well, I tried to use wine to install dvdcatalyst, but it didn't work (free version at least). Since it is an emulated windows, I guess there are files that dvdcat is dependent upon (finding a processor, difficulty reading a dvd, etc.) so I get several errors throughout, including trying to close dvdcat it says "file not found." I suppose part of it could be user error, I am new at wine, so I will most likely try tinkering around with it again tonight or in the coming week when I have time. I'd love to be able to make it work, hopefully I can and if dvdcat is willing we can collaborate on a linux reliable version, if I can figure it all out.

Edit: On a side note until I can figure it out, does anyone have experience getting linux (ubuntu specifically) to rip and convert dvd's successfully to droid style? If so what programs do you use? I'd be willing to go a longer more complicated route until I tinker with dvdcat settings and get it to work (one-click solutions are awesome)

I'll see if I can get a linux version up and running. What distribution (ubuntu/fedora/gentoo etc) are you running, and what version number?

As for DVD to Droid in linux, use Mencoder, and look for iPod/iPhone tutorials for it.

I'm on ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala, but don't kill yourself over it, I can tinker with it when I get home later...I really don't mind. Thanks for the tip about Mencoder though.

Sorry to be such a headache, I just don't have any windows machines anymore, got rid of Vista on the laptop a little while ago in favor of Ubuntu, and then a macbook pro and a mac mini, so no windows option for me

I'll have a look.
I might have to make some mods to dvdcat to make it work on wine.

It took a little bit of modding (the CPU message you got was the main problem)

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop version) on my eeePC900 HD (celeron 900mhz, 1gb memory)
Updated ubuntu, then installed wine, and copied dc3.dll and DVDCatalyst3.exe (the 2 main files of dvdcat3) over to a pendrive, and ran it from there.

Performance sucks, mainly because of the laptop specs.

Auto Cropping does not work in Ubuntu, but when I turned that off, it ran.

I'll fiddle with it some more, but I figured it'd be cool to share :)

Edit: It took a little bit of hassle, (keep losing wifi in ubuntu) but the DVD actually decrypts properly as well.

It's the netbook itself. I had to switch wifi cards in it with my Dell to get OSX Leopard working on it, but a few days ago I switched it back because my Dell was having some connection issues. I think the antenna cord isn't making proper contact, but don't feel like opening the thing back up again for now. I dont think it's ubuntu causing it.
