RE: HOW TO: Convert DVDs and Videos for use with Droid

This is cool news on the Ubuntu progress! Beats using Handbrake!

Heck, one of the main reasons I chose the Droid was that I wanted to be platform agnostic!

FYI - I tried re-ripping the three "problem" discs I mentioned earlier. Got one of the three to rip in DVD Cat by turning off AnyDVD. Will PM you the info on the other two as promised.

The ubuntu part is no fun though. If you look underneath the screenshot utility in the pic, you can see why. 0.15x speed.

I did use the latest dvdcat code, in which I added a "copy" profile which basically rips a DVD track to an unmodified mpeg video file, and since that doesnt use compression at all, the rip ran at about 10x realtime speed.

How have you been getting handbrake to work? I've been trying without success for hours...I get errors on reading nav and it won't get past reading the files for my "300" dvd.

Thank you meekless :)

Glad you are enjoying dvdcat.

As for your question in regards of Digital Copies, nope.
The problem with those useless things is that they need to be activated on the computer using iTunes (for the MP4's) or WMP for WMV files, and the devices that play them (iPod/iPhone and "Plays for Sure"-compatible devices) need to be linked to the account used to activate.
There are work-arounds to convert them by using a screen recorder app such as TuneByte, which kinda works like the good old VHS days when you hooked up 2 VCR's together to dub movies. I find it easier and faster to just rip the DVD instead.

thanks again DVDCAT,

thanks for the quick response time man!! reading through this thread i am most impressed with your customer service, especially considering how bad its gotten everywhere else is this country.

i agree about those copies. cant figure why the manufactures basically put all their eggs in one basket on how you can use them. i was hoping there was a way because your software does convert them quickly but once u copy/cut and paste its a no go.

thank you again for everything!!

You are welcome :)

I hate waiting myself, so I try to make sure anyone with questions for me doesnt have to wait too long for a response.

Not to be a little off topic, but how long does the Droids battery last with playing movies. I'm carious because I have a 4.5 hour flight comming up and was carious if I was possible to get 2 movies in on one battery

It definitely drains the battery when you watch movies. I doubt you'll make it 4.5 hours without bringing along a charged extra battery, or one of the "plug in" battery packs. I seem to recall that it's just a bit over three hours on video.

I didn't try Handbrake on my copy of 300. DVD Cat ripped that one no prob. HandBrake is kind of a monster onto itself, as it is very customizable....but that is it's downfall as well for nubes like me. You have to experiment a lot to find the right settings foir many movies.

Right, I used handbrake on my mac no problem when it was 0.9.3 but since it updated to 0.9.4 it has been incompatible with VLC on Mac...thought it worked for linux, maybe it's the same issue though. I can't even get to the "customizable" part, it won't read the disc so that I CAN customize the outputs, that's my problem. Oh well, once I get home from work and have a few minutes I'll figure it out. I read about a workaround for mac that I can maybe get to work and if I can't figure out the linux versions then I'll just use my mac for ripping...

DVD Catalyst 3 on Ubuntu

dc3_ubuntu.jpg

Did a little more work, and I guess for now this is what it's going to be
I slapped the harddisk from my eeePC (with Ubuntu) in my Dell laptop (Core2Duo 2.16Ghz, 4GB) and ran a few conversions. It's considerably faster than when I ran it yesterday on the 900mhz Celeron eeePC, but not as fast as it would run in native Windows.

Using the same settings, the standard iPhone profile runs at about 3.3x realtime speed on Windows (40 mins for a 2hour movie), and on Ubuntu, it runs at 2.16x realtime (55 mins for a 2hour movie), so DVD Catalyst 3 on Ubuntu runs at about 65% of the speed of DVD Catalyst 3 on Windows.

I think that's still a considerable improvement over the alternatives in the Ubuntu world right now. It may take a bit longer, but you save it in "hassle time" by not having to rip something three or four times before it's right.

Agreed, and a simple "one-click" option is huge...it would be nice to just put a dvd in to convert, click the button, and leave for an hour or two, or go to bed and it'd be done in the morning...
