Ready for root

Just to keep everyone posted, as I see it has already been, yes me and birdman are working on finding a new exploit and getting root, we tried for awhile last night and got nothing, but I'm confident we will have something soon.

Just got my Droid 3 today. Overall, the new Blur is not nearly as annoying as the old one, but the bloatware has got to go. Here's the list of extras from my phone:

Amazon Kindle
Vz Apps
Blockbuster
Citrix client
City ID
DLNA (Way cool. I'm keeping this one.)
GoToMeeting
Guided Tours
Vz Im
My Accounts
Ny Verizon Mobile
NFL Mobile
Skype Mobile
Slacker
Social Location
Social Networking
Vcast Media Manager
Vcast Music
Vcast Tones
Vcast Videos
Vz Navigator

There's also a pretty decent file manager and network printing app that are pretty neat too.

If they would just give us the ability to remove the Verizon ware I suspect most would be fine with not having root access to the phone.

Good luck woody and birdman, I hope you guys come up with something soon. I know me and everyone else are really counting on you devs to really make this phone impressive.

I actually like the task manager Moto put in as well. It shows you the apps, if they are running or not, how much memory they are taking up and you can kill the processes. That is well done.

But the bloat is absolutely just stupid, I count 20+ garbage apps and I am pretty sure that's north of 300MB of space taken up.

You can kill all those apps from running though, and it's not like them taking up space slows your phone down. I got my phone yesterday at like 12, killed all the stupid verizon crap and haven't restarted since. Phone runs excellently.

The phone does run smooth -- no doubt there, even with the preloaded bloat.

Personally, I want root for so many other reasons:

  • changing the SD card cache size and other props
  • tweaking memory auto-killer (min/max free values)
  • overclocking
  • titanium backup
  • nandroid backups
  • screen caps
  • SMB/CIFs-enabled kernels (for video streaming)
  • Chainfire kernel mod to add Tegra 2 instruction emulation to non-Tegra devices
  • tethering (I have an Android tablet that does WiFi only)
  • theming/customizing the UI (custom ROMs, etc.)

Plus you get other benefits when rooted -- typically next-day ROMs for the latest version of the OS rather than waiting weeks or months for an OTA update (and even if you're lucky).

Theming with root!

Amen to all of that! Especially the last point! I like to be able to extract the Framework and modify my theme. dancedroid

I agree. Motoblur is so disgusting. I can't wait to get some clean stock android loaded. The apps that are loaded on this are so dumbed down and the icons are poorly designed. Makes the phone look like one of those cheap Chinese knockoffs.

Rooting to me is all about liberation of my device. I decided to pay full retail for the D3, and for once I am actually happy with my phone. Sprint gets it, HTC and Samsung got it customers want to remote bloatware (truly remove it now hide the icon) and mfg's know users want freedom.

Funny how the two companies that helped to push Android to the front are the two screwing us over the most. Thank you Motorola & Verizon Wireless, thank you very little.

Good for stock. Blows away stock DX. My d3 is the best blur I've used by far.

I would agree with this statement. However, I am experiencing random reboot issues. About 6 a day. I called support this morning an they're sending me a replacement, it should arrive tomorrow.
