Ready for root

Call me crazy, but why doesn't someone try to infect their phone with the droiddream malware? It gains root and then yes, it turns your phone into part of a botnet, but with a little investigating, it might point out where the "best" security vulnerabilities are... just a thought. -bbyshadow<3sOG-

I think the vulnerabilities malware like droiddream takes advantage of are well-known. I really cannot imagine D3 is affected by it.
Most likely these vulnerabilities were under the first the devs tried out.

The phone does run smooth -- no doubt there, even with the preloaded bloat.

Personally, I want root for so many other reasons:

  • changing the SD card cache size and other props
  • tweaking memory auto-killer (min/max free values)
  • overclocking
  • titanium backup
  • nandroid backups
  • screen caps
  • SMB/CIFs-enabled kernels (for video streaming)
  • Chainfire kernel mod to add Tegra 2 instruction emulation to non-Tegra devices
  • tethering (I have an Android tablet that does WiFi only)
  • theming/customizing the UI (custom ROMs, etc.)

Plus you get other benefits when rooted -- typically next-day ROMs for the latest version of the OS rather than waiting weeks or months for an OTA update (and even if you're lucky).

I don't think root means what you think it means.

And you'd for the most part would be wrong. Some of those things he listed requires access to the boot loader but most can be handled with just root access.

Slightly less then half of the items on that list have nothing to do with root whatsoever. When it comes to kernel mods, root doesn't matter, period. I could have all the kernel mods he mentioned and not have root. (As unlikely as that would be)

And just how do you plan to get those kernel mods on without access to the boot loader?

You do understand there is a difference between an unlocked bootloader and having root, right?

Root is just giving full access to the file system. You don't have any access to the actual kernel that is booted.

In order to load a custom kernel you have to be able to access the bootloader, and then once you have access to that, root is kind of a moot point, because your booting your own file system. You could set the permissions to whatever you want. You could set e+rwe to the whole filesystem if you wanted to.

The only thing that I was slighty incorrect about (which I realized after I posted) is that some kernel modules *may* be loadable with root. But that would only be

a) After Motorola releases the source of the GPL'd stuff (namely the kernel)
b) Their kernel supports any requirements that the kernel modules needs. So most likely you'll be able to load cifs.ko and tun.ko but not libaudio.ko or some other custom CM kernel.

edit// the tun.ko part might not actually be needed. I don't know what Motorola changed, but the Droid3 has a lot more robust VPN support then previous versions.

You and I are on the same page but I was merely pointing out that some of the things he wants does not require any kernel modifications and root would suffice. Obviously at the point you have access to the boot loader and can load the ROM of your likings than root isn't a necessity.

Just to recap

  • changing the SD card cache size and other props (needs root)
  • tweaking memory auto-killer (min/max free values) (needs root)
  • overclocking (needs kernel access)
  • titanium backup (needs root)
  • nandroid backups (needs kernel access)
  • screen caps (needs root)
  • SMB/CIFs-enabled kernels (for video streaming) (mayberoot)
  • Chainfire kernel mod to add Tegra 2 instruction emulation to non-Tegra devices (needs kernel access)
  • tethering (I have an Android tablet that does WiFi only) (needs root, possible kernel access if blocked)
  • theming/customizing the UI (custom ROMs, etc.) (root can only get you so far)

Root != Kernel Access

Root means exactly what I think it does and intentionally used the term loosely as synonymous for administrative access to do whatever you want with your phone's OS, whether it be through superuser's root permissions, modifying the kernel, or anything in between.

The real point of my post is that without the user being given permission to have root (or access to the bootloader, etc.), you're crippling or disallowing many things. One of the respondents to the OP was that you shouldn't need root because the Verizon and Motorola bloat isn't that bothersome to begin with -- as if that's the only reason you'd want it. Hence my list.

I'm kind of bothered that you feel the need to troll on something like this; were you looking to cause trouble?

That was no where near my intentions.

By you saying "Personally, I want root for so many other reasons:" and then shooting off a list of reasons, you are saying "You need root to do these things" which is not the case. No matter what your implication was, you were misleading people. I was trying to point that out.

Any no point did I get confrontational. Even when Venom51 questioned my comment, I didn't yell at him. I explained my point, and we both agreed we were talking about the same thing.

If you consider criticism trolling, I'm truly sorry.

edit// I guess I could of been a bit harsh in my original post, but that doesn't change the fact.

Would you be happier with "at least root"? I understand and appreciate the minute differences in access, but I'm really unconvinced that it matters to most and certainly not trying to miseducate the masses.

Simply put: I'm not okay being without root (or more) on the strength of an argument that the installed bloatware isn't that bad. That's all I'm trying to say here.

see now the threads will get interesting because the actual release more people will be coming here and the tranquility we had from the 7th to the 14th is gone...my hope is that with more sales...more devs...you guys can keep fighting ill skip over the posts anyways...im just waiting and waiting and waiting until the day i click on here and it says

WHO SAYS THE MAN ALWAYS WINS...and someone has unlocked the phone or phone a temp root or a permanent root...i just wanna get rid of all the bloat...it constantly opens itself and restarts itself and im sick of using task killers to close out the garbage....

im seriously contemplating returning this phone paying the 35 dollar restocking fee and just keeping my D1 until moto unlocks or someone figures out a workaround...

besides the new keyboard and bigger screen my D1 is just as fast (bloat free running sapphire froyo/ cm7 for gb...sometimes i get sick of the reboots and roll back to froyo) plus the D1 can tether and watch netflix...seems like i downgraded for now anyways

I started this thread hoping to generate some motivation or get feedback from potential rooters and I think it has. Problem is the D3 itself. I have shelved it until it gets rooted and get CM7/Justice or something. Plus the pics are so blue tinted I think te camera sucks. I was so spoiled with my DX I didn't even realize it. I have loaded Justice .1 on my DX and it is like a brand new phone.
I'll be watching and waiting for te root. Until then I'm back on DX.
