that crap freaks me out...Oh and to top it off the ROM was a bad zip file...had to revert to a previous ROM for all of that trouble

I assume this requires a wipe coming from 2.1?
So is the Google search bar suppose to be gone? If so is there a way to reactivate it how it was?

Not exactly the same but...you can add a Google search bar widget by long-pressing the screen and finding the Google Search option. It isn't the same looking search bar but it does the same searching.
I have wondered that since the OG. Why aren't phones made this awesome out of the box? I guess it is to give us the chance to root it and love it without Verizon's help.
