can I flash newer versions without wiping?

I'm not wiping and having no problems. went from 1.5 to 1.8 then to 1.9 without wiping.

wiped everything including formatting system, loaded 1.9 and my phone was lagging and stuttering a lot. i tried a different kernal (franco nightly #5) but my phone didn't like it. it kept locking up and drained 20% battery in less than an hour. i reloaded 1.8 and the lag and stuttering stopped. battery also is normal again. anyone else find 1.9 very slow? it was probably my phone not liking something. it also got very hot. it all stopped when i went back to 1.8. phone is very quick and snappy again.
