[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

Ok i have bootloader 2c.7c and i can not get RSD to see my device i follwed everything word by word up till the point were rsd should see my device and i get nothing. Using windows 7 64 bit. Any suggestions? Thanks

did you try moving the SBF file to the location of the RSDlite files?

I'm assuming Mac users are left in the dark?

unfortunately, yes. its being worked on though

First of all i want to say thankyou for helping. I have got it to see my device. I had to download the 64 bit drivers from motorola. Now i have selected the .sbf file(located on my computer) but the start button is greyed out. Also a stupid question will i have all my apps and contacts after root. I have put the sbf file everywhere including the root of my drive and is still greyed out.

EDIT----------Ok i searched thru the thread and seen that someone shortened the name to recovery.sbf and it worked please add this to your Original tutorial. Maybe as a trouble shooting section.

I've been waiting to root because i want to be sure this won't happen.

I just finished rooting my Droid, following the OP's instructions to the letter, and I can safely say that you will NOT LOSE anything. It's like you did nothing to your phone, until you open your app drawer and see the Superuser icon.

Installation aborted on final step.

First of all, thanks very much to Motocache1 for putting this together. The instructions are very clear.

Unfortunately, I am having a problem similar to some mentioned earlier. Everything seems to work fine until I try to "Install /sdcard/update.zip" When I do, I get the following messages:

-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/bloc
k/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount SDCARD.update.zip
Installation aborted.

[note that the above is typed verbatim as line wrapped on the device]

I use an XP machine to install SPRecovery. I then used my terminal utility on my mac to confirm that the update.zip is correctly named and the right size (as specified by Motocache1 in a previous post). I make sure I "Allow update.zip installation" before "Install /sdcard/update.zip".

It seems like SPRecovery can't mount my sdcard at all. I have the latest Verizon OTA FRG22D installed (which clockworkmod failed to block) which unrooted me.

Any ideas out there how I should proceed? I feel like the only guy who can't get this to work.

You probably need to do "Umount /sdcard" if you mounted your SD card to ADB the file to it. Let me know if that fixes it.

Yep. Even though there is a Linux tool called sbf_flash, the source is not available and a version compiled for Mac has not been released. If you want to hack phones you really should have access to a Linux or Windows box - an old one running Windows XP is fine as long as it has USB 2.0 ports.

i do not see it in the apps list either @ home or in manage applications. i had Ti install it after prompted that it could not proceed due to no root privileges and busybox not present. also after first and second reboot the phone froze after booting in ... have not seen this happen since then and i've power cycled the device a few times. i have what i believe to be an early build droid (before the slide out kb was improved).

after installing it via Ti, i can use the app's features. regarding any error messages during the flash, i did not see any on the phone or in rsdlite. everything went as explained in the OP.
You won't see busybox in any apps list as there is no APK associated with it. It is strictly a command line (like via terminal emulator) binary that rooted apps use to do things. It is always a good idea to let Ti Backup install it's own version for its own use anyway as it makes sure Ti Backup is happy.

It sounds like whatever the issue was with your su initially it's happy now if Ti Backup isn't complaining about root rights any more.

Well, I never used ADB. I transferred the update.zip to the sdcard using my Mac to avoid any confusion over any redundant .zip extensions. I did this only after putting update.zip on the sdcard using the XP machine previously and getting the same abort condition. So I still don't know what to do next.

Hey, Motocache, you really work late!

I'm going to be tied up for a little while as I'm re-reading all 39 pages of this topic to write the new "Frequently Encountered Issues" section in the OP. I may not finish before I decide I have to go to bed, we'll see how it goes...

Hey, Motocache, you really work late!

Yeah - I've got myself into a pretty stupid sleep schedule right now. Mess with this stuff until 5, 6, 7 am, sleep for a couple hours, and then get back up. I must be insane.

Your error [E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)] means that SPRecovery couldn't get to your SD card.

I'd suggest the following:

  1. Make sure the phone is not connected to your computer when you're trying to do the SPRecovery part. The file should already be on your SD card, so no need to have it connected to the computer at this point.
  2. Make sure that under "mount options" (in SPRecovery, off the main menu) you see "Mount /sdcard". If you see "Umount /sdcard" that means your SD card is mounted and you should hit that option to unmount it.
  3. Also in "mount options", make sure you see "Enable USB Mass Storage". If you see "Disable USB Mass Storage" that means your SD card is set to be controlled by your computer and won't be available to SPRecovery.
  4. After #1, #2, and #3, then go back to the main menu (use the power button to back up menu levels) and try "install", "Allow...", "Install...".
Let me know if this fixes it.

Thanks. I'll try those steps tomorrow. If I keep going now I'm going to make some stupid mistakes I suspect. I'll let you know how I fare as soon as I can.

Thanks again.
