[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

this procedure worked great on a Win XP system. Be sure you have the correct version of RSD and drivers. I am rooted again on FRG22D now after I did the OTA update and had lost root! Thanks for putting this together.

First post on this website and first time rooting my droid. The procedure worked like a charm... Wireless tethering on droid ftw!! Thanks so much for easy directions.

Oh and I used Windows 7 64bit.

Fantastic guide. Step-by-step instructions made it a breeze to root my phone. Many thanks!

Windows 7 32bit. Had rooted my phone previously with EasyRoot, then accepted the FRG22D update (D'OH).

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I missed my root so much after updating to frg22! I don't run roms much anymore, but it drove me crazy not to have access to all parts of a device I own.

THANKS AGAIN!

and, LOVE the Superuser icon :)

does clockworkmod recovery remove the signatures check feature when OTA updates are pushed? Or will it push the OTA to my phone and me decline it?

I want to install a custom rom Chevyno1 ss4.7 but looks as though I will have to flash clockwordmod recovery...and download the pay app ROM manager from the market.
I'm sorry, this is not really on topic. The process in this topic puts SPRecovery on your phone and it blocks OTA by just refusing to install it.

If I were going to install a ROM I'd do it myself rather than paying an app to do it for me. Installing a ROM is a heckuva lot easier than what you did in this procedure.

Okay I'm having big problems here I got everything working up installed the root and everything looked like this [screenshot]
so when i go to reboot everything starts crashing on me my slide lock screen doesn't pop up but my notification bar is showing and i could mount my phone on to my computer but i'm left with a black screen.

the os i was running was stock FRG22D
Everything looks great for the update.zip part.

  1. Did you grab the screen grab with DDMS?
  2. Can you confirm the name of the SBF you loaded?
  3. How did you originally get to stock FRG22D?
If power cycling the phone doesn't clear you up, then the first and least intrusive option would probably be to grab the FRG22D "master OTA" (search for it here on the forums), copy that to your SD card and apply it. That should put you back to stock. Then you can decide if you want to try rooting again or not.
Just for the sake of documenting it in case I or anybody else wonders what the solution was to this one (worked out via PM), this phone had a semi-ugly unroot process done prior to doing this process. I had the requestor install the FRG22D master OTA to get to a clean unrooted state and all was well from there out.

My jaw is on the floor.

I just received a new OG Droid today (old one's charge port was real loose), and 5 minutes later, I'm up, rooted, and using Titanium Backup (Holy crap recommended) to restore my apps and data.

BRILLIANT write-up. Remind me that I owe you a 12-pack :rating10:

tried to flash droid but it seem it didnt work went trough motions but thats all please ask questions so i can answer to figure out//android 1 2.2 frg22d

I didn't see an answer to my question, so my apologies if it's already been asked. I rooted a while back using Easy Root; no problems, overclocked, and everything is working fine on FRG01B. Got an OTA a week ago for the update, but I declined figuring it would break root, and it never asked again. I already have Flash, so I'm not sure I'm missing anything. I've had no issues being rooted so far, but would feel better doing it myself, esp. after reading post #155 (Thanks for that, by the way!), plus I am going to be checking out other ROM's, and don't trust the 1-click method any more.

My question is: If I want to re-root using the method at the beginning of this thread, is it just a simple matter of un-rooting Easy Root/uninstalling it, and then have at it?

Thanks

Please go through everything in the "Frequently Encountered Issues" section of the OP. If none of that works, come back here and post full details of everything and we'll see what we see.

Great post Jeffe65. I wouldn't bother "unrooting" - probably no need. Tell me the answers to the following (you can just use a numbered list that matches my numbered questions to your numbered answers) and I'll let you know if I see any issues and what I'd do.

  1. Where is your Superuser.apk (likely /system/app or /data/app).
  2. Where is your "su" (likely /system/bin or /system/xbin).
  3. Where is your "busybox" (likely /system/bin or /system/xbin).
  4. Where is your "mkdir" (likely /system/bin or /system/xbin).

Doesn't step 13 of the instructions explicitly cover that?

They are in, respectively:

1. /system/app
2. /system/bin
3. /system/bin
4. /system/bin

Just wanted to post my thanks to MotoCache1 for the write up, everything worked flawlessly for a rookie here. I accidentally applied the OTA FRG22D upgrade over my rooted (via easyroot) FRG01B installation and lost su capabilities, most notably for me was that the wifi tether app would no longer run. After a quick run through of these great instructions I'm back in business. Thanks again!
