Try googling nandroid backup error 31 and read some of the threads. Seems like an sd card issue or at least the way your phone interacts with your sd card.
9. The SBF install goes fine, but when I go to apply the update.zip file in SPRecovery I get an error that it can't mount /sdcard (I can't reproduce -- need exact error message).
In SPRecovery, go into "mount options" from the main menu.
Ensure you see "Mount /sdcard". If you see "Umount /sdcard", your SD card is mounted -- choose "Umount /sdcard" to unmount it.
Ensure you see "Enable USB Mass Storage". If you see "Disable USB Mass Storage" your mass storage is enabled, choose "Disable USB Mass Storage" to disable it.
I'm not sure if this has been posted or not, but I had this problem while trying the procedure. I found that for some reason, the 16gig card that came with my droid would not allow me to install the update (the sdcard would not mount). I used an older 2 gig card I had and the process worked perfectly.
Thank you for your guide. It worked great and I'm now rooted.
Question? Can the root files in update.zip be applied using the normal stock recovery and not sprecovery? I know someone that wants to nandroid backup his phone but can't install an SBF file because the USB port has been damaged. But if he can get root he can install ROM manager and get clockwork or sprecovery from that method.

No, your SD card needs to be formatted. Remove all the data from it, save it to your PC's hard drive, and then format the card using your phone. At that point you can root and copy the data back and nothing should be lost.
If you have another SD card kicking around that'll fit, try using that first.
No he has the replacement phone. He is trying to get data off the old one. He can charge the battery with his new phone and move it to his old one to work on it.

E: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(no such file or directory)
E: can't mount sdcard.update.zip
installation aborted
i have read through your fei, and faq. i have selected all the correct settings i have uninstalled and replaced the update.zip file (via drag and drop cant understand the adb yet) several times. please help --jp
I'm having the same issues as this guy. I'm certain that the file is named update.zip. I have noticed that when I go to the mount options and try to mount and then unmount, it won't let me mount. Not sure what's up.
