Sorry guys, work nights sleep days. At first I was going by root required programs (SuperSU, Titanium and WiFi tether), but afterwards root checker verified as well. As for the pause, I waited for a couple of minutes at cleaning up... so hitting a button didn't screw things up. But after a while I went to SuperSU to check and sure enough it allowed me access. I left the program running to see what it would do. I closed it after 10 more minutes of being paused, it never finished.
So I decided not to FDR, and go out to the bar instead.. lol. On my way home, I'm randomly browsing through my phone and I come across the SuperSU app. I open it up and it asks me to grant permission, I say yes, now it says I'm rooted. I downloaded a root checker and it says I'm rooted. So I guess it worked?
I was so stoked to find this thread until I read this will not work on the Maxx HD. I wish I knew I needed ICS to root my phone before I did the OTA JB upgrade. Everyday that passes is one day closer to me doing a FDR and going through with it.

It sounds like you are trying to use the utility to restore root rather than the one to root. I mean that's the msg I got anyway when I tried using Matt's utility to restore root. I never protected root and I remember that msg coming up.
