Root on Incredible 2

Here is the process I went through to root and rom my incredible2. I tried writing this completely off of memory, so i might have left out little things, but this is the basics and SHOULD get you there.

1: AlphaRev X - Make it your phone <---Go here and follow the instructions, Basically you need to download the alpharevx.zip, and the HTC Drivers. Then fill out the information form and generate the key.
2: After you have the key, unzip the alpharevx.zip and install the HTC Drivers to your computer.
3:Boot your device normally, plug USB in, charge only mode. Enable USB debugging in settings, make sure 'HTC Sync' is UNINSTALLED (on Windows).
4: you should see a black screen that starts to do it's thing. After it's finished it will ask you if you want to install a custom recovery? Y/n? make sure you put a CAPITAL Y or i've heard it won't take.
5: Now you should have S-Off, And you should have flashed your custom recovery.
6: With your phone turned off, Hold Volume Down + Power Button and keep it held until a screen with writing comes up. From there you can choose to boot into your recovery you just installed.

Your phone should boot into sp recovery and you should see options like
Reboot now
install update.zip
install from sd card
wipe cache (not the exact order)
[PATCH] Install Superuser, Busybox and Rooted Kernel (For Use After Obtaining S-OFF) - xda-developers <----Look at this thread and download the patch that is listed here. This patch goes onto the root of your SD card (no specified folder)

*If I were you (i did) using the volume keys scroll down to backup and restore and make a backup or your rom. That way if something happens you can resort back to that.

7: after your backup is done, go to install zip from sd card and choose the file that you downloaded (rmk_root_setup.....)

8: Also if your wanting to flash CM7 or any rom. Go to install zip from sd card and scroll to CM7 or whatever rom you want to flash.

8: When finished, choose to reboot system and that's it. You are now running a custom rom.

I have been reading what I can about rooting the phone and I understand that it shouldn't be done if you don't really need to. The only reason I would attempt it is for even better battery life and to ratchet down all of those wacky permissions most of the apps have.

Two questions:

I am not a power user so most of my battery usage is from the display. I have it turned down to an acceptable level but it still shows up as the main battery user. It doesn't seem that it would but will rooting help with this?

With root, will I be able to regulate permissions for each app, or do ROMs have that built in, e.g. automatically restrict certain seemingly nefarious permissions?

Please keep in mind, you cannot root with the AlphaRevX method if you have accepted the Gingerbreak update. The only way to root is with the Clip method.

ok i'm still kinda lost

can someone tell me:
do i need to do a full data wipe if i install a different rom?
or can i just clear cache?

i wouldn't mind trying that cyn7 but really don't want to redo everything again after all the mess i went through last week.

what are opinions of the best rom out there?
i am a business owner and wonder if there is a rom out there that would help me along those lines? (appointments, contacts, etc...)

S-off but no super user access

OK, so i successfully loaded the alpharevX via linux process to get s-off, and it loaded CWM. Entered recovery in CWM and flashed both the su zip file and the rmk root set up.zip file . Both completed successfully but I re-booted and still no super user access? What am I missing??

My H_BOOT Settings:

VIVO_W XB SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.13.1002
RADIO 0.99.01.0225.2
eMMC-BOOT

CWM version: V4.0.0.4

anyone? roms? data cleared?

i would like opinions on roms & what people think are good!
and do i need to do a clear data & start from scratch!
I now have rom manager & what I see i don't think i have to clear it!
please help!
thank you!

It looks like to me, you have S-Off, all you need to do is boot into recovery and install a rom (backup first) Try running a root only app (Rom Manager, SetCPU, Titanium Backup, etc....) and see if it asks you for permission to run the app.

I personally can only vouch for CM7 as that is the only rom I have ran on my phone. Rom preferences are about as different as Music tastes. Also, Each rom acts differently on YOUR phone than it will MY phone.

When switching to a complete different rom, it is always suggested that you Completely wipe Cache AND Data, that way you know you got a clean install and nothing is left over corrupting the old rom. It's not TOTALLY necessary to wipe data. Sometimes if you don't, you get tons of force closes on things. So I would suggest.... Make a backup of whatever rom your on....Then flash the new rom without wiping data....If all goes well, your good....But if you get force close heaven.....Restore your backup and flash again (this time wiping data)

Just remember, If you backup all your apps with Titanium Backup, after you flash the new rom, All you have to do is restore your apps with Titanium Backup. Then all you have left is to set up your homescreens.

Here is a really good explanation of everything from the wiki/cyanogen site: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Incredible_2:_Full_Update_Guide
