I wonder if they will just port Flash over as an updated ROM when 2.1 comes out or if they will have to recrack 2.1.
The 2.1 official update is suppose to block the root exploit. So I wouldn't update to official 2.1 if you plan on getting rooted.
Want my opinion? root your phone now, and get the custom recovery. Your going to need that anyway, so get ahead and you will have less work to do when the custom 2.1 ROM releases (or at least a 2.1 ROM that allows you to re-root if needed one day).
In any case, whatever you do, don't install official 2.1 that Verizon releases. You won't be able to root your phone (unless somebody makes a new root hack, which could take forever...).
I just rooted and am running at 800mhz. It is amazing and completely worth it. Only takes like 20 minutes as well.
i would say go ahead and root your droid, with a bit of reading its a painless experience. Im currently running a 2.1 ROM oc'd at 800mhz. The extra 250mhz really makes it quite snappy. Oh yea did I mention live wallpapers look amazing on the bright 800x400(ish) screen

You guys need to weigh what you're actually getting with the Official 2.1 vs. what's available right now through ROMs. The current ROMs are much better than what 2.1 will be when it does come (who knows when that will be). Who cares about a fancy schmancy app. drawer animation when you can be running your phone smoothly at 800 or 950MHz. Plus the ROMs offer all kinds of other nice tweeks, including stuff from 2.1 like added home screens and ported over programs/widgets.
The real issue you guys need to consider here is that when the Official 2.1 is pushed down and you install it, the rooting method that is currently being used for 2.0.1 will no longer work. So all you people who are saying "I'm gonna wait for 2.1, then root" have another thing coming. At that point you're going to have to wait until a new exploit is found which could take a while. In the mean time, the people still running already superior ROMs on 2.0.1 will be able to take advantage of even more new things that have come along from 2.1 and will likely have no problems getting flash.
I don't see any reason not to get things going right now, other than just not wanting to deal with being hacky.
