The update is LATE but it's supposed to be rolling out. If you don't get it in a few days look around for an official update that you can push onto your phone manually, since I'm assuming you're not rooted.

I'd like to know why the Droid stops receiving mail after a couple of day until I turn off the phone and then back on?

First I've heard of that, but rebooting your phone at least once every couple of days is a good idea anyway.
