(Rumor) Verizon planning To End All Unlimited Data Plans By End Of 2014!

Say what you will. I could have bought 2 phones outright or utilized the Edge program. I chose the later for a few reasons, none of which are poor financial management. Either way I pay the same, one way is upfront the other is over 2 years. What difference does it make? It works for some and doesn't for others.

Just curious, does Verizon force you into insurance seeing how its a rent to own proposition?

The $30 upgrade fee is still ridiculous. They have sent me information about exactly ONE of the clinics that they supposedly use this money for. The main claim is that it's for smartphone education clinics. It's garbage, they charge it just to charge it. If I could I'd just ride it out with an old device out of spite until it's so out of date it can't work properly on their system. Just ranting now, but the upgrade fee is bogus and they know it.

No I don't think so but it highly recommended cause if it's lost or stolen you still have to make the monthly payment on the phone.

At 30 bucks a pop times 1000000 people paying the upgrade they should be able to produce an epic film 6 hours long, just ranting.

I thought the upgrade fee was only if you bought in store - has that changed?

Now THIS is a legit example of gouging...although I believe AT&T is doing it as well. Granted, when I've bought a few times in the store it takes a good 30+ minutes to complete the transaction, between unboxing and setting-up the phone and activating it (which I can easily do myself), to billing and updating my account. So theoretically they can justify it because of the labor, but that begs the question what are they paying the reps for?!?

But that is the route you go to reduce overhead and identify which stores are unprofitable to close (this assumes the activation fee is waived online). They have been laying off reps and closing stores.

Unless you are a complete clutz and/or forgetful, insurance is flushing money down the toilet. Mine was $8/mo before I canceled, PLUS I think a $99 deductible or whatever they call it. So after just 12 months it's $200 if you have a claim. Makes more sense to me to just put that $200 toward a used phone and then upgrade in another 12 when your old contract is up.

I've had a smartphone for 4 years now, not including work phones, and never had a claim - that would be almost $400 I'd have thrown away on insurance if I kept insurance. In 15 years of having a cellphone, I've broken one, lost another, and lost 1-2 more that I recovered. So theoretically I'd have a claim every 5+ years = $600 which is basically the cost of a new phone (except I wouldn't be getting a NEW new phone on a claim). And it costs me nothing to go back to one of my old phones for a few months or more.

You play the odds and win, move over I'm in the same boat.

No loss phones, no broken phones. For me.

When I had at&t I had a new phone coming every 3 to 4 months. Most my phones where destroyed when the hit the wall doing 75MPH. Life was good then. Just had to find the time to go get a new phone.

I disagree. If you're making $150k+ a year, more power to you do what you want. Like I said, one phone every 12 months is equivalent to full retail every 2 years - if unlimited data is worth $15 extra per month to you it makes sense regardless of your disposable income. The reason the program is a rip-off is upgrading @12 months (or every 24 months) is break-even and just a matter of convenience, but more or less often it makes more financial sense to pay full retail up front.

I plan on having my Rezound another year or more (3+ years total)...might go full retail (though unlimited is not really worth it to me), but only for a phone with 4gigs of ram or more and an SD. I could certainly afford to flush $300 on a phone every year, but I'm not that loose with my money (and I'm not cheap).

I would be willing to bet that 90%+ on this plan are not saving enough, which means they should not be throwing away money on new smartphones every 6-12 months.

My voice;

Typically I wait and buy a cherished possession of someone that needs an iPhone for work. 350-400 shortly after release. Abuse it for 6 months and repeat process. Sell previous phone for 250-350 and repeat. My droid ultra was the first phone I bought full retail. Any regrets? No. Every person has their own "agenda" that may not agree with some or none. If it works for them more power to them.
My agenda now is not to buy another phone for a year. That being said, chastise me in a couple months for buying a new phone that is only slightly better than my phone now.

it's any time you go through Verizon to upgrade. Whether online or in store, as long as you extend your contract they will charge you $30 and consider it an upgrade.

Also, they now charge $35 restocking fee on all devices returned within 14 days. So if you got a free phone and don't like it, it will cost you $35 just to get rid of it. Of course you can call and complain and the supervisor can credit your next bill.

So, what happens when you Edge Up after paying half the price in 6 months?
You buy a new phone financed over 24 months and still owe half of the cost of the first.
As for insurance if you keep the phone past mfg warranty period it extends the warranty for as long as you keep the insurance in force. It's a good deal only if you have to use it.

I think it's when you upgrade through anyone. I got my HTC One at BB and Verizon added the $30 to my next bill.
