Samsung Galaxy SII May Come to Verizon as Early as Aug 12, and Before Other Carriers

mmm, dual core & 4g.. wouldn't care what the ui looks like, the first phone to do that I'm leaving the dx for. Can't wait to drop this $50 comcast bill down to $20 for unlimited tethering.

SICK! I'll probably get this instead of the Bionic, since this is unlocked and already has developers. I'm sure it won't be hard to port them to our version (Samsung Function). This does have LTE right? If you look it up on PhoneArena, it says it does.

No. It has gone through the FCC review process for HSPA+, which SOME carriers call 4g (but it's not anywhere near as fast as LTE). But it does not have LTE according to any press release or specs I have read.

I was strongly considering this phone as an alternative to the Bionic, so I did extensive google-fu trying to track down whether this has LTE, but from what I read, the answer is most likely no. Nothing indicates the GS2 will have LTE.

There was this spring roadmap leak that supposedly stated that galaxy s2 would be released on Verizon with 4G in may, but if you read the leak, you'll see that the Galaxy 2, (which is the galaxy tab 10.1) is what is actually mentioned in the table, and the author mistakenly took that as the GS2. I think that's where a lot of the confusion comes from.

Also, many people doubt that the slim form factor of the GS2 can house an LTE radio, which tends to need a thicker phone.

I hope I'm wrong. If the GS2 does have LTE, I will seriously consider it as a contender. But LTE is an absolute dealbreaker for me as I live in Detroit and we have a huge LTE area here.

Same, I live in Manhattan, so our 4g area is also huge. Really hoping it does have LTE and that Phone Arena is right. I'm willing to pay anything for this phone, and will probably keep it until 5g (lol) comes out.

I'll probably make it a family heirloom, and pass it down so that everyone can see what a great phone will is lol.

Even if it doesn't come with 4g, I'll probably get it. I don't really stream media to my phone, and when I go on Youtube, I'm usually at home using Wi-Fi or on my Transformer. No 4G won't be a huge deal breaker for me. I had the chance of getting the TBolt for 199, and got the X2 instead because of the Tegra 2 chip :)

After seeing how different the at&t version is, I don't think it would be much of an issue to throw in a 4g antenna.... and maybe the hoped for 1.4ghz processor :p

I have 4g area and it isn't that important to me. So by your logic you would rather have a pentium 4 with 256 ram and a fiber optic connection, than a core i7 with 4gb ram and dsl. You do realize that the gs2 processor will handle JavaScript much better making the pages load quicker even with the same connection speed right? App opening speeds and day to day operation, I guarantee will be a quicker smoother operation on the gs2. Thi is more important than lagginess, locked boot loaders, and 4g to a lot of people.

Are you comparing a 4g original droid? That's not even a close comparison for the Bionic. Both the SG2 and the Bionic will have current-gen processors and comparable ram, although the bionic will likely have ddr2.

Look, both phones have their appeal. I think the SG2 looks sexier. But to say that the Bionic is the equivalent to a pentium4 and the SG2 a core i7 is way off. It's more like a core i7 vs a core i7. Or at best a phenom II quadcore vs a core i5.

The idea is everyone is putting everything on network speed over real life performance of the phone. I'm not even talking about benchmarks I'm talking about day to day use. Everybody is thinking LTE or nothing and I am saying a better quicker phone experience is more important to a lot of people. We haven't seen Bionic yet but with it being the essentially the same processor as the D3 it will perform nearly the same including the lag. Watching comparison videos of the gs2 vs. All the top dual core phones right now it walks all over them. Add in that BMX has tried both and says the Bionic is a nice device but it is no gs2, gives a preview of the field.

I've been watching clips on YouTube for D3s that are literally fresh out of the box and I'm already seeing redraw. Sure, the redraw is not overwhelming or debilitating but it could get worse over time and it's a major annoyance for someone like me who is currently stuck with a phone that is plagued by redraw (lag, if you prefer that term even though they're slightly different things). I remember watching a video of the older version of the Bionic that was at CES or whatever that show was and I saw the same kind of lag/redraw. Of course, I'm sure Motorola has worked that out since then but what if they haven't. When you look at videos of the SGS2, there is NO lag. That thing is just blazing fast in every dimension and it's gorgeous too (in regards to screen, form factor, and touchwiz). So, I'm going with the SGS2, for now, but if the Bionic comes out and is as "blazing fast" as the SGS2 (and has good battery life) I could definitely change my mind.

Yea, its a fast phone.
But the OMAP4 processor is faster than the GS2's.

If the OMAP4 processor was overclocked to 1.2 gHZ I think it would be faster than the GS2.

Sigh, I guess we'll have to wait until the Bionic is actually out to know for sure how its performance compares to the SGS2...if the damn thing would ever come out.

My D3 is very snappy, and it should be using the same processor as the Bionic.

Once it gets overclocked to 1.2GHZ, we can see how it compares to the GS2.

No 4G, no for me, I will be up for a new contract this December and live in NYC "s 4G area" , hopefully HTC has something nice coming by that time, since I am not to fond of touchwiz or motoblur, HTC sense kicks both to the curb.

I completely agree that you shouldn't put everything on network speed. But I also think that network speed shouldn't be downplayed or dismissed.

4g is insanely fast, with realistic download speeds between 7.2 to over 30 mbps. 3g download speeds range from 600 kbps to 1.4 mbps.

Even at the lowest end of LTE you are still looking at better than a sixfold increase of the best 3g speeds.

And to answer your point, the D3 doesn't have DDR2 ram. The Bionic will. So no, the D3 is not a fair comparison.

In fact, you simply CAN NOT draw a comparison between the two phones as to their everyday usability because neither have been released yet in the US.

I'm not here to trash the GS2 AT ALL. I think it's a really, really sweet phone and I can totally understand why someone would want it over the Bionic if LTE isn't important to them, or if they prefer the looks of it over that of the Bionic. But i'm not going to let you say that, in terms of speed the Bionic is a Ford Tempo (a pentium 4), and the GS2 is a Bugatti Veyron (A core I7). Give me a break.

meh. I was wrong, it does have DDR2. Apparently all the OMAP4 processors do. I stand corrected.

Still, neither phone has been released. How about we wait until then to draw processor comparisons?

That is totally not true man. The OMAP4 doesn't come close to the SGII's processor. Have you seen the browser speed comparisons against the iPhone 4 and quadrant scores put up by it? It blows away ever phone out there, and will do the same to the Bionic. It won't even be a contest. The OMAP4 really isn't that powerful, the 4G speed is the only thing the Bionic will have going for it. The SGII is pulling over 3200 in the quadrant, the OMAP4 is doing like 2500. Where did you see that it was faster? I haven't seen it.

Quadrant? Really?
If only there was something more inaccurate than that.

LG Optimus 3D's OMAP 4 benchmarked, pulls ahead of Exynos and Tegra 2 -- Engadget

This test uses a reliable benchmark.
It shows the OMAP 4 processor scores 4 points ahead of the Exynos.

+1 One of the more intelligent posts.
