SBF to root and to unroot

Rename sbf to like 123.sbf and place in C:\

Try again if not, reinstall rsdlite, if not reboot machine and phone try again

This has worked for everyone I've talked to except one who used another computer. Not sure if he tried it before trying the other computer. I kept the original filename in the link but I think I'm going to rename it to
2moto-droid2.01-stock.sbf. I haven't been able to figure out why it happens to some and not others. The full filename works fine for me on 64 bit Vista.

OK. The first time i used a work PC and went perfect. This time i am trying it on my home PC. Are you saying that you can only use 1 PC?

ok - may seem stupid but reading through the posts - and then going back to original post - it seems you have to do Option 1, 2 , 3 AND 4 to have root on stock 2.1.

However at the bottom of step 2 AND step 4 it says you will have root access. So - do i have to do all 4 steps or just the first 2 (step 3 if you want backup)??

I just want root and then will run SetCPU to over clock.

Thanks guys. Love this forum. :-)

I've followed your comments on the SBF to root and to unroot thread and had a question that seems to fall under your area of expertise. Sorry to PM this, wasn't sure if you were still watching the thread.

I used Astro to back up all of my apps from the market (and even made note of the ones that it couldn't back up).

Where I'm having a problem is when I reinstall them using Astro they are not appearing in the Market as installed and thus I'm not getting the updates to the apps. Even apps I'm am certain that there are updates for...

Is there anyway you know that will correct this? Shouldn't they all automatically download to the phone by the google servers after the wipe anyways?

Thanks for any insight you can provide

Good chance you have them by now. If not go ahead and post in that thread, I do keep an eye on it. It is supposed to work automatically. Just like you won't always have market updates but if you check your market downloads then you might have some, this should work the same way. You could try checking your market downloads and see if that "hurrys up" the process too.

No luck on the restoration of any apps. I've reloaded a number from Astro and when I manually search for them on the market the do not show as installed on my phone. Also, they still are not showing up in the downloads section either. It's been just over 3 days now so I'm giving up and reinstalling them all by hand.

I was lucky enough to have emailed someone a listing of all the apps on my phone using Easy Share (available on the market) at least I didn't have to write them all down or try to remember them. Easy Share also saves the direct link to the app, making it a decent way to recall the apps and retrieve them.

No..it seems to not work on some PCs though. Something isn't right. Drivers, permissions, flaky install, I dunno. Some have to do a rename, others do not.

options 1,2,3,4 done in that order will give you root. correct.

You caught me..I did have the same blue summary at the bottom of options 2 and 4. Thanks for catching that, I have updated the summary for option 2.

To use SetCPU you need a kernel that allows overclocking. There are a bunch out there that you can apply to your stock rooted rom.

You also can apply a rom that includes an overclocking kernel instead of step 4. Visit the rom section and review those instructions to see what each includes if you go that route. Rom Manager is also an option to flash various roms. I used the 2nd link in my signature and followed those manual steps. To each their own.

I've updated the file name used for 2.1 stock sbf flashing to a much shorter name to see if that helps folks.

I'll also add that all of the files located on the rescue.macleod-web.net http://rescue.macleod-web.net/ site have been personally tried by the Rescue Squad and known to work....which is where all the files in post 1 of this thread are stored.

I just wanted to say thank for the very thorough explanation on how to Root a 2.1 Motorola Droid. I followed the instructions step by step and installed and completed everything without a problem.

I believe I am rooted now, i had to reactivate my phone and when i check the phone settings it states;

Firmware version - 2.1
Baseband version - C_01.3E.03P
Build Number - ESE81 by Pete

Now I want to install SmokeGlass and I believe I have to follow the instructions as indicated in this link: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/adamz/29999-rom-tgz-smoked-glass-v6-0-03-15-android-2-1-ese53.html

Wipe the data to ensure once everything is booted I dont experience any problems or force closes.

I installed Terminal Emulator and tried to insert the following commands to install busybox; (taken from How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid )

type "su" (no quotes)

a popup should show up asking for root/su permissions
click on the checkbox
click on allow should get a # cursor
run the next two commands
Code:
cd /system/busy

Once i entered the command above I get the following message "cd: can't cd to /system/busy

Am I doing something wrong..please advise?

**Since I am going to install SG, do you recommend downloading ROM manager from the marketplace?

***Should I install busybox before or after I install SG?

Thank you in advance for reading and answering my questions. I really appreciate the help.

Been trying to root my phone for months, but couldn't pull it off because all the directions were written by someone much more experienced than myself. This thread did the trick, and I never had to worry if I was doing the right thing. Good work and thank you!

Follow the directions at the link you found. Read that first post 2-3 times through to make sure you understand everything and to learn as much as possible about the rom you are about to install, then use the installation instructions.

Under the part that says "here is what it includes..."
check out the 5th bullet where it says busybox included.

It says nothing about installing busybox (which it comes with) or typing any of the other stuff.

While Terminal Emulator is a great tool it is not needed to install SG. You already are rooted so there is no need to root either.

thanks, and congrats!

You now have the stock 2.1 rom with root access and can play with Metamorph, apply themes, add a kernel for overstocking and more.

^should that read in red OVERCLOCKING? sorry still new to the rooting....... and read it two times as over clocking not stocking
Excellent eye, good catch! You'll do just fine rooting, theming, etc, for I read it as OVERCLOCKING quite a few more times than 2. As did many others, me thinks:)

Thanks, corrected it!

no prob. i was really tired and was like hmm must be something with memory... thought i'd ask. im starting to root now... but need to find a rom......

alright so i am at this point now.....

If you are not interested in changing your stock rom but would like to customize your phone by applying some themes, use wifi-tethering, or overclocking then you will need to root. You can do so and keep the stock 2.1 build by flashing this special rom created by Pete of Bugless Beast fame. (box option 04)

Root 2.1 by using SPRecovery

  1. Download ESE81update.zip
[/URL] thanks to Pete of Bugless Beast for creating this file
  2. rename the downloaded file to update.zip
  3. mount Droid to computer
  4. copy file from computer to root of sdcard
  5. unmount card from computer
  6. hold X while rebooting until SPRecovery screen comes up
  7. wipe data factory reset
  8. install
  9. allow update.zip
  10. install /sdcard/update.zip (depreciated)
