Simultaneous talk & data...?

If it makes you feel worse, the EVO runs on 4G (not VZW though) and T-Mo is supposed to be releasing a 4G capable phone sometime this fall, to run on their HSDPA+ network (aka 4G as well). Though the HSDPA+ seems more widely spread than Sprint's 4G. At this point though, by the time you can upgrade, it'll be widespread enough to actually have some choice of phones and locations rather than just a few metropolitan areas.

Is there any word if VZW's network will ever be capable of doing simultaneous talk & data? I bought the window mount for my droid x yesterday, & was using the turn-by-turn navigation for the first time. Although it's missing some fetures that I would like it to have that my Garmin Nuvi 1350 does - I love the fact that the maps are always up to date, free of charge, & that traffic is also provided free of charge! :-) dancedroid

The only drawback is that while on a call, the phone loses its data connection. Although I despise AT&T with a passion! - and would never give them my business, I have to admit that them doing simultaneous voice & data is not only a cool feature, but a practical one.

If your WiFi enabled phone is attached to a wireless network, then you can have voice and data.

This is one area where Verizon is definitely behind the times. It reminds me of being on dial-up :icon_eek:

Not really "behind" so to speak considering LTE is MUCH better than WiMax and HSDPA (+) combined! Their top speeds is LTE's lowest speed. Add that to the fact that it penetrates walls better and we have a win win! Verizon doesn't follow, they lead!

Yes, behind and playing catch up. How many years has AT&T offered simultaneous voice and data? Sure Verizon is going to have it available, NEXT YEAR, and it may even be better, but the fact remains that they (we) are last to the party.

When those LTE phones roll out next year we can buy them and finally do something that AT&T customers have been doing for years. That's not leading.

you sir, are a tard.

it has nothing to do with vzw behing behind the times. it is simply a cdma vs gsm (or hsdpa+ for that matter) issue. LTE will allow simultaneous voice+data transmission.

Verizon CHOSE CDMA, knowing that this would be a limitation. Something you are forgetting is just how reliable the network is though. CDMA is a more expensive and much more reliable technology than GSM, which is why Verizon flaunts their dropped call rate (also, VZW has a lot more general network coverage with towers which helps) and ATT can't. So make a choice, dropped calls or loading a site over 3G while you chat?
I came from the iPhone and ATT ruined my experience with it. Loading a site while you talk on the phone? Try finding a 3G signal strong enough around NYC to do it first.

When it comes to "leading the way", I would say Verizon is the best. 90+ million users can't be wrong.

I know it's CDMA v GSM. So because Verizon used a technology that's not as advanced it's ok that other companies can do things their phones can't? Now LTE will rectify that, but Verizon is playing catch up because their tech isn't as capable.

I came from AT&T and had problems with service when downtown. Lots of dropped calls. I'm not defending AT&T, I'm glad I'm gone. But, I do miss being able to surf the web for an answer, or download an email while speaking with someone. It's funny you said "make a choice" because that's exactly what we have to do now. Verizon may lead the way, but not in this particular category.

A question to no one in particular: if the ability to do two things at once is so unimportant why is Verizon adding it?

It's not that they are adding it, it just comes with the technology. Verizon would not be able to just add something to each CDMA tower to enable data while on a call because that signal technology just can't "multitask" (every time I think of that word I think DRRROOOIIIDDDD. Damn you Verizon marketing).

ATT and VZW are both moving to LTE, don't think someone has explained that yet in this thread. This poses a new question: Will you be able to roam on ATT's network if you don't have a VZW signal?

on gsm the 3g tech hdspa is data only and that is why you cant have data/voice if you dont have 3g coverege because their 2g network handles all the voice

while CDMA's 3g transmits voice and data on the same frequencies

the data only aspect of at&t's 3g network is why they can claim the speed boost because it has no voice traffic

i would think you will just go back to the evdo network if you dont have 4g coverage

It's not a happy coincidence that they're including the simultaneous data/talk with LTE. Verizon certainly has the ability to not include it when they switch to LTE, or they could even charge for it. They're going to include it because there are a lot of folks who wish they could multi-task instead of having to hang up the phone to do something. Which, unfortunately, is just like dial-up internet.

If someone said "I'm on dial-up, and I have an incredibly awesome hard line that never hangs up," I don't think anyone would say they were "leading the way". On this they're not, which stinks, but I'm still glad to be on Verizon.

When VZW launches their LTE network will the Droid 2 automatically gain the ability to do data and voice simultaneously?

Thank you.

No the Droid 2 is still CDMA only. The first Droid that might be 4g capable for Verizon might be the Droid pro.
