Swype is coming to Android!!!

Sorry Martin but I don't see how this is really 'news'.... we already knew Swype was working on an Android version (thus the beta we are all running) and we already knew that they were going the OEM route...

So if figures that it would come on a device at some point. So far Motorola has not signed a contract with Swype (and likely won't as Moto generally does NOT outsource/pay for such things) this doesn't do much for us Droid owners. Now Eris owners, that a different story.

But then it will be nice for the devs to have an 'official' release to rip and include in their Droid ROMs:icon_ devil: but expect it to be hidden and hard to find (the apk) Swype has done a good job of keeping track of devs using their apk and asking them to remove/not include it in their cooked ROMs (not that this really means much, M$ does the same with Voice Command on WM ) :icon_ devil:.

I jumped the gun on the thread, yes. And it is only T-Mobile that's offering Swype.
Sorry I got excited. I'll accept the blame... the shame... and the spanking.

Kill me and this thread :icon_eek:

dang martin...i'm on your side.this sucks.why does everyone have to pounce and debunk a post?:icon_eek:
You don't have to be on his side just to make him feel better, it's ok. Help us bash him. :icon_ devil:

PS - You do realize that we (or at least I) am just giving him a hard time out of fun, right?

TMobile...MEH

Actually this is probably BAD news for Droid owners. If Swype got OEM contracts from TMobile/HTC you will most likely NEVER see an app come out or have it come on a Moto/VZW device. A bummer considering Shapewriter is crap since the last update (which hopefully they plan to fix).

Just my take on it.

Not sure about that, Matt. It's obviously not in Swype's best interest to sign exclusive contracts with individual manufacturers or carriers. If Swype continues to gain popularity, it's obviously in Motorola's and VZW's interest to eliminate the competitive check mark that Samsung and TMobile enjoy.

In general, as virtual keyboards become more and more common and physical keyboards disappear, I suspect we'll see more and more variants of the "slide action" interfaces. I have no idea what's proprietary and what isn't, but I wouldn't be surprised to see (a) more such keyboard apps appearing and (b) shortly followed by lawsuits among the various vendors for IP violations.

I've edited the first post. Just thought it was good news to see Swype shipped on an Android device. Wasn't trying to stir up troubles.

Mods if you come through feel free to close this one down. I'll accept it. It's only humiliation. It wears off :)

I suppose I see your point but by that logic the iPhone and every other major phone should be logically available to everyone, but it's not because I'm sure AT&T has signed an exclusive contract with Apple. I'm not claiming to know they did this for sure with Swype, I'm just saying that speculatively there is a good chance that TMobile, since they ponied up the money, will make it be exclusive to phones they sell.

Of course, money talks. But Apple's agreement with AT&T was only "exclusive" for a period of (I believe) two years. And Swype may have a similar agreement with their OEM's. My guess, however, is that the folks at Swype believe they have a "killer app" that they won't allow to be limited by exclusivity arrangements. Less money up front but more freedom of action down the line.

All speculation, of course. But I have a feeling that T-Mobile is willing to go to just about any lengths to get their hands on new technology even if it means it's non-exclusive access. Witness their agreement with Google for the N1.

You definitely have points and I could be completely wrong (it happens occasionally :icon_ devil:)...I have had four cell carriers (some are better than others depending on where I have been stationed at in the Army) and TMobile's service and customer service is by the far the worst. So whatever they can do besides being cheap as hell.

There is so much bad info here already due to people thinking they know what they are talking about because they read it on the net... lol Not martin in this case... but we just like to keep the false or inaccurate info to a min...

If we didn't like Martin we would be flaming away.... it's all good.
