Texts deleted on their own??

This morning when I woke up, all of my texts were gone. I typically go through and delete any threads that I don't expect to continue every night, and have my phone set to not delete anything automatically. I read on a few forums that the texts are technically still available on dialer storage? I'm not sure what that means though. Is there any way I can get the thread I had back or at least keep this from happening again?
