Thunderbolt: Apps that are safe to remove once rooted.

Well I feel dumb, on my OG droid to get rid of system apps, I would just delete them through root explorer. So that's what I decided to do for the Blockbuster app but after reading this I see it can cause problems later on with OTA updates. Weird thing is, is that I even after deleting the .apk, I still have the Blockbuster app in my app drawer and I can still use it. Any suggestions with on putting it back in system/app or should I be okay?

Ive got the same question

Are you going to take any OTA updates? After rooting my droid I never took any OTA updates cause I always got the new release quicker through the rom community. So unless your going to take an OTA update then you probably dont need to worry about it. Plus you can always flash back to a stock image if you HAVE to take an OTA update.

I Rooted and renamed the Blockbuster App and it still appeared. I went into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All Found Blockbuster, clicked it and did a Force Close. Went back to the App drawer and though the icon was there, when I pressed it, it gave an error. I believe after I rebooted the phone the icon also disappeared.

What do you mean when you say "take an OTA update". On my droid, I would actually take the OTA update and then once in CW, it would deny the OTA and I would just reboot and I was good. I'm wondering if its going to be the same situation with this. I don't want to "take or accept" the OTA when it comes and it screw my phone up. Actually I made a backup before I deleted anything but didn't want to do all that if its unnecessary to worry about.

If your running a custom rom most devs DISABLE the OTA option, so it never even checks.

What ROM are you running?

I prefer to play it safe and use Titanium back up to FREEZE the apps instead of risking issues by deleting/renaming. It works very well for me and is simply enough. Tap > Freeze > done

I'm a long time member at Android Forums and XDA and was looking for a list of safe apps to remove to see if I missed any and stumbled upon this thread. I created an account here just to post that you can safely remove any and all traces of VZW Backup Assistant. I have removed them and my phone is perfectly fine. Not sure where the OP heard that it will FUBAR your device, but better safe than sorry I guess. Also, I would make a backup before removing just in case as YMMV

There are several VZWBA* files there. Which ones to move?

Good to know your able to remove it. I read that info about it fubaring the system in the same thread I linked this from.

Im still having issues with removing some of the widgets...

I removed the following along with the associated ODEX files and they are still showing up in my apps draw...what gives??

  • com.htc.FMRadioWidget.apk
  • com.htc.FriendStreamWidget.apk
  • com.htc.MusicWidget.apk
  • com.htc.StockWidget.apk

Is it safe to remove the HTC Music player? I really don't like it and it doesn't seem to work in landscape mode when my phone is in the car dock.

Have you rebooted yet? Traces of removed widgets will remain visable until you do.

Yes it's fine to remove it and the widget, but if you want to use music as an alarm you need the app installed.

Thanks! I installed the default android music player and the phone seems to not be bothered that the HTC version is gone.

Hey got a question, titanium backup can be used to remove apps, freeze, and backup.

When I opened it I saw a ton of apps there. Should I use titanium backup to just backup apps? And whats the advantage of backing up aps...I wanna be able to back up the whole phone, every single set up is there any way to do that?

Also, root explorer is only used to rename or delete apps (rename in this case since you said we shouldnt delete them)?
