Understanding Battery Life...

Hey Capt,

The way I charge mine is when the power still on. After I plug it in I then press the top button to turn off the screen.....After I awake....It's fully charged and ready to go.

I do that too. But tonight I tried something different. On my old phones I could turn them off, yet charge them at the same time. With this phone, tonight I plugged in the charger, then turned the phone completely off, it shut off and immediately turned itself back on.

Not sure about you guys but my battery life does seem much better, but I'm still testing that theory. Anyone noticed a much longer battery life?

I'm noticing significantly worse battery life after the update. I appear to be in the minority. Battery life has pretty much been my only complaint of this phone since I got it. Other than that, I love the phone

That's what I'm seeing, at least today. In the past 6 hours when the phone was at 100%, all I did was turn off the alarm, take one 5-minute call, play 3 hours of music off my SD card, and do a few minutes of web browsing. Screen brightness was set to low the times I had turned it on and I didn't have GPS, Wifi, nor facebook syncing on. Battery indicator's down to 60% and I've now got it charging.

I am in a government building with bad coverage where my office is so I can't tell if my depleting battery issue is an update issue or not yet, since it varies at times. Besides that my phone was at 60% before the update and when I got to work.

I don't get it. New phone, already turned in one battery and got a new one. Got the update and still have awful battery life. Talk time is maybe 10-15 minutes. Only thing turned on is syncing gmail, etc. No Bluetooth, No GPS, No Wifi. Got the advanced task killer, removed all widgets. What is the point of a phone like this if you have to be AFRAID to use it during the day because you are going to run out of battery half way through the day. Seriously this is stupid.

Ok, so I got the Droid, and I really like it. Most days, even with pretty heavy use, the battery lasts through MOST of the day. Wi-fi and GPS off, and brightness kept at minimum of course :).

I do think battery life is a weakness though. I am hopeful some 3rd party extended batteries may come out that will relieve the problem somewhat.

I do have one question though. I've heard vibrate sucks battery. That being the case, does haptic feedback have any appreciable effect on battery life? I like the feedback, but if turning it off will net an increase in battery life, it's well worth the sacrifice.
I've always wondered about the power requirements of vibration in general. Being a mechanical thing, I would think they're relatively high. And yet vibration is so ubiquitous in mobile technology.

Does anyone have a good answer for this?

Okay, guys... For this Battery Issue, this is VERY important...

List all your apps on your phone. Don't tell me that 'but they aren't running'. Just list them.

Right now, the common denominator for many people reporting Bad Battery Life:

  • Weatherbug
  • Meebo
  • Some sort of IM App
  • Some Beautiful Widgets

Please also take the time to get the battery usage state before you plug it in and list what it says.

Right now, the 2.0.1 update does not seem to be the 'only' reason. Because I have the 2.0.1 update and had the phone running for close to 3 days uptime before a charge. While I have Meebo on my phone, I do not leave it logged in. I do not have Weatherbug, or Beautiful Widgets running, which suggests to me that a lot of you are having 'chatty' apps/widgets that are causing your significant battery drain, more than before.

I don't have any of those apps on my phone. Never have, probably never will. I don't stream pandora or anything either. I am also on day 3 today of uptime, and still have 70% battery left right now. I took the phone off the charger Friday morning.

I have disabled all my Widgets and have turned off all location and GPS settings and turned off Bluetooth and wifi as well as turned screen brightness too about 25% and backlight to 15 seconds. My battery is still going by way to fast. I am to 80% after about an hour of use. I take off charger at 530am and by 9 or ten im at 50% or less. .. I'm lost.

Here are some approximate battery usage we may get for DROID phone for a full charge of the battery. All are assumed to be continuous usage.

The battery should last about 9 hours when screen brightness turns to high in standby mode (Use screen only).

Battery may last 7 hours for phone call or internet data only (continue access without turning screen on).

Battery may last 3hours GPS navigation (Use Screen + GPS satellite + Data + CPU).

Battery may last 40+ hours for playing MP3 from SD card.

Battery may last 4 hours for playing Youtube movie (Use Screen + Data + CPU).

Battery may last 4 -7.5 hours for browsing Internet (Use Screen + Data + CPU).

The order of the amount of battery consumption is: GPS > DATA > Screen > WiFi > CPU.

The above is just my estimation without too much strictly test.

I doubt Weatherbug is the issue. It only updates infrequently. You can set it to update whenever you want.

I would say having too many widgets is a big drain.

I find that talking on the phone of course is a top drain. Following that is usage of the screen. You can't possibly get three days using the screen often.
