[Update] Verizon's New Family Data Plans Begin: It's Called the Share Everything Plan

If you upgrade with a discount after 6/28 you lose your unlimited plan...you're not forced into the family share, but can choose the tiered data plan that came what I believe last summer?

Only way you get to keep it after 6/28 is by paying full retail price for a phone

Right, but if I upgrade my feature phone to a smart phone and choose a tiered data plan my 2 other unlimited data lines are left alone. Then when I re-activate the feature phone on the line I just upgraded I can activate the new phone on one of the unlimited lines. Technically I'm not upgrading the unlimited line, I'm simply activating a phone I currently have on my line...

Basically he is using an upgrade on a line that didn't use data anyway to get a new phone at a subsidized price without using losing his unlimited because he will just reactivate the feature phone and activate the new smart phone on the unlimited line. Creative way to chat the system if you ask me

Creative, yes, but it will only work once every 20 months. So if you have 5 lines, 4 smartphones and 1 feature phone, it will take 80 months to get the 4 smartphone lines upgraded with subsidized handsets without losing unlimited data.

Pretty sure VZ will make you switch your plan if you do this. I didn't have a smart phone several years ago and wasn't on the appropriate plan when I went to upgrade (had to be on nationwide or something) and I had to change my plan to upgrade. My understanding is if you use an upgrade on ANY line at all, you will be forced to switch to the new plans.

But they can only force the change on the line your upgrading. In this case it's the feature phone you don't care about. Then do phone swaps to put the new smart phone on the unlimited line and the old smart phone on the upgraded line. Technically all you are doing on the unlimited line is a phone swap.

I'm not so sure about that. After 6/28, the old tiered plans will cease to exist. If you are currently on one, you can keep it, but otherwise, tough cookies. If he upgrades that one line, that line will be forced to family share (thus forcing his whole account to family share). That's how I see it. Really wish we had a VZ rep here to clear all this confusion.

Can't I use an upgrade from any line on whichever line I want? I'm pretty sure I've used an upgrade available for my line to upgrade my wife's phone. That would give me 3 upgrade dates over a 2 year period.

From what I've read so far I thought the share was optional?

The old plans will still be an option. The new Share Everything plans are simply a new option.

It is optional unless you upgrade. I know for a fact that if you upgrade after 6/28 with unlimited, you are forced into share. If you upgrade after 6/28 with no data plan, you are forced into share. If you currently have a tiered plan, I've *heard* you can still upgrade and remain tiered.

hey will not be forcing anyone into the Share Everything plan. Upgrading or not, you can keep your old plan. (with unlimited data being the only exception)

My question is, why are they charging $50 for 1 GIG of data, and $100 for 10 GIG's of data, then the $50 data package should give you 5 GIG's, or at least 4 GIG's.

Which is what I said...unlimited goes bye bye when you upgrade. If on tiered, you can keep your current plan. If you are upgrading a non-smartphone is the question here. When you upgrade to a smartphone, it puts you on a new plan. I'm not sure you can avoid the share in that case.

Yes, you can transfer an upgrade from one line to another. However, transferring the upgrade does not absolve you from renewing the contract on the line you are transferring the upgrade from. How I read it is if you have a smartphone line with unlimited data, even if you transfer that upgrade to a different line, renewing that smartphone line will force you to give up unlimited data on that line.
