As far as the unlimited texting being included with the data plan... Verizon wireless sales reps quotas and commissions are based on something called DAPC or data access per contract, they have to keep their DAPC above I dunno it was like 17 dollars when I was working there. They have to get this about that number despite all the crappy phones that barely do any data like the samsung smooth or whatever, So if they tell u that getting a data plan and text messaging are included together and give u a price for the plan..it's probably very accurate on price, but if it's something you're used to paying for I would have them show you the plans, if you don't want as much texting or whatever, oh yeah and as to that 45 dollar plan w corporate email? I have mine on a 29.99 email and web for smartphone plan and have my corporate email synced just fine with my droid.

No, I didn't get lied to. National Select 1400 minute family plan has unlimited text. I believe the 900 minute also has unlimited text also but you lose the 10 family and friends so I went with the higher minutes for about 20 dollars more.

I've read on here that there can be delays on delivery of texts using GV so I'll continue texting via Verizon. I think I could make some changes to my plan, depending how GV Works out.

As far as I know the Nation 1400 Family plan DOES NOT include texting at all, this is the service I have. There is no 900 minute calling Family plan, the next one down was 700 minutes according to Verizon when I was in there on Saturday.

Texting is extra.

For "crappy's" benefit, I'll admit that I did say data plan in my original post. I'm new to verizon and I just wanted to get the Droid and Verizon's network. I set up my plan on line while in conversation with an online Verizon specialist on what I was looking for because a lot of what is on the net is a bit confusing, such as the 5gb "limit on data" that everyone felt was on the Droid plan.

Anyway, yes the unlimited texting is on the voice side of the National Select 1400 Plan.

I was looking for a family plan with unlimited data and text and that was what I received.

The Basic Family Plan does not have text included, but if you want to go bare bones, that's fine. You'd save $30 but you get no texting. You're going to pay $.20 per text unless you buy a bundle. So if you end up sending more than 150 texts a month, you're paying more than the National Select plan. I send way more than that a week and I just started using texting not to mention the other members of my family.

If you do a plan it's for each phone. 500 message per phone is costing me at the least $20.00 + .10 for overages. I know about overages. 1500 messages costs me $30 per month for two phones (not including me) and I still might pay overages. Thus the decision to get the National Select Plan with NO MESSAGING CHARGES for any of the phones. A simple decision actually.

ok, I looked on the website and see that I have a different "family' plan. I have 2 lines, 1400 minutes for $79.99 and then a single Data account for the 29.99 or whatever it is. I pay $5 each line for 250 text which I haven't gotten close to yet.

So it appears there ARE different plans, my apologies.

Since I don't recall seeing clear, concise answers -- and, to be fair, all this is discussed in countless existing GV threads, don't overlook the search function or site-restricted Google search:

You can. Senders need to send SMS to your GV number. Texts to your cell number will count against your text plan. You are stuck using the GV app for messaging (unless you enable SMS forwarding).

Yes, you can send and receive SMS (no MMS) with the app. No, it does not count against your text plan. GV uses data for text messages.

However if you enable SMS forwarding (it's not enabled by default) then you can receive GV SMS via other messaging apps such as Handcent and ChompSMS. The forwarding feature forwards text messages to your VZW number. If you have this or any SMS voicemail notifications enabled then those messages will count against your texting plan. There are additional caveats with SMS forwarding that you want to be aware of before using.

does the app have to be open?

Nope. Typically you need to open it once after any install/update though.

Also be aware that it's not uncommon for SMS delivery times to have delays with GV. It's intermittent. I find if I manually tell the app to sync that it will receive new messages. In general, I know I have a new message because I also use the GV extension for Chrome (on my work and home computers) and it doesn't have any delays in my experience.

I didn't read every post completely as it seemed to go a bit off track. If you have a Google voice number you can use your gv text app for free messaging. I have very low allowed text messages with Verizon, so I use gv for those I'm most active with.
