Verizon Begins Charging Full Price of Warranty Phones if Rooted?

Oh well. I will continue to tether and use my data the way I please since I am paying for it. :D

And technically I am in the right, since when I tether, I am not using their mobile broadband network that they use for their own hotspot app. I am still connected to the regular 3g network. And they cannot differentiate data to my laptop, computer, or straight to my phone.

Obviously you will. One thing has been proven with all this back and forth. Android users definitely aren't smarter then iOS users like some like to say...:D

I'm smart enough to not get reamed by a company and fight for my personal freedoms when anticonsumer activism is thrown my way. Can't say that for iOS users, or you obviously.

Believe me, you are no different.

I am smarter because I don't get suckered into paying twice for something

yeah, but that's countered by your inability to distinguish between root and installing an app...or your inability to read a TOS...so yeah, no, not much smarter then ios users really :D

The amount of mis information floating around in this thread is epic.

All of you are spewing out "facts" that you have been told by other people on the internet or who are mis informed.

Show me in my contract where it says "rooting" voids my warranty or in the TOS.

Show me one piece of proof that Verizon will charge you for a rooted device, other then some random blog or person saying it happened to them.

Right... Didn't think so. Have a great weekend guys, try to not take this so seriously. Root away if you want, or don't, either way, grow up guys.

You're right, there isn't a lot of accurate and verifiable info here. Regarding the root thing, though, there isn't any specific language stating as such, but the common interpretation of contract terms is that there is a "catch-all" provision that Verizon COULD use to deny you warranty coverage if you rooted.

It's the same as a computer manufacturer denying your warranty if they found out you overclocked your CPU or if they found out you corrupted your own OS by installing faulty software. Verizon could simply deny you service if they feel your own software tinkering is what caused the failure of the device.

The legality of it is dubious, but what are you going to do if Verizon denies you a replacement? Take them to court for $200?

Wouldnt it be alot cheaper and easier for both moto and vzw if they just had vz sbf phones in-store? i mean, im sure that would solve alot of problems ppl have that cant be solved by a factory data reset.. especially with the fact that the stock software on these phones really suck and alot of ppl send in their phones simply because they end up so slow or have so many problems after awhile of just too much clutter.. just like most pc's that need a fresh install of windows every now and then, android and moto software needs a fresh install from time to time to keep it running properly..

agree with that ..SBF would seem to be a smart thing to have.. they may have them .. but if you are rooting a phone that has an SBF file .. you should already have the SBF on your computer and you should know how to use it.. again just my opinion.

I was implying that more towards the more lower tech person who has no intention of rooting and just wants a smartphone, like my own mother for example.. seems like sbf'ing a phone in store is much cheaper and more efficient than sending a $500 phone back for a software issue that could have been resolved without the need to waste money on shipping it all over the place and having a perfectly good phone refurbed.. but it also needs to be understood that smartphones and android are both fairly new still and have only recently exploded in the past couple years, alot of things are still not worked out properly on the business and consumer end of things.. i just think alot of money gets wasted on ignoring simple solutions..

Uhm, I thought that was ALWAYS the rule with Verizon... I made sure to completely unroot my Thunderbolt when I sent it in for a replacement after the headphone jack was busted.

Why is there an argument about this? We know it's against TOS to root the phone, we also know people have reported getting caught and were told they violated their warranty. This is all fact.

One of our moderators use to work for Verizon and he has stated this is true.

The topic of the thread is can they charge you full price for the phone if they discover it's been rooted. I say it only violates warranty and you are free to modify your phone if you want.

I know the difference, Verizon doesn't seem to since they vaguely state that both are against their tos. :p

again you're proving my point...both verizon and I gave you the benefit of the doubt...it was more like a "there's no way this can be misconstrued" scenario....you've proven us both wrong indeed.

Every so many years or so we come up with names for a generation of people, this one,as I see it, is the "Disposable Generation "where we/they think if it's broken I'll just get another no matter who foots the bill as long as it's not them.
