Verizon Drops The Axe! Will Disconnect Unlimited Data Users Using Extraordinary Amounts Of Data!

Criminal? Unless you're under contract with them they can do what they want. I'm sure anyone still under contract has nothing to worry about here but those on month to month are getting the boot. As has been stated... they fulfilled any contractual obligation when you were under contract, now on month to month they can stop service as they please with notice...and it sounds like there will be notice....30 days...which is what would be required.

This won't go to the FCC...or anyone else.

Not actually criminal, in the proverbial......
Also the FCC might be interested, they were interested when Verizon was going to throttle unlimited people. Verizon backed off.

If Verizon came and said today, "Unlimited" means no more than 100GB a month, then they have a leg to stand on. But the FCC has told them, they can't do that. What they are doing is retroactively punitive and punishes those who used a service they paid for.

Coming in after the fact and saying we don't like how much data you used without indicating a maximum up front is slimy. They raised the price on unlimited, and I guess they expected people to bolt. When that didn't happen they have found possibly another way to get people to quit.
I have a felling the FCC will not like this at all.

The other issue they have about kicking everyone off an old plan that they "no longer offer" would be that ANYONE not under a current plan would be subject to the action. While this is fine, the FCC would take a dim view if only one class of user were kicked off. So they can kick everyone on unlimited off because the plan no longer exists, but they would need to do that for *EVERY* plan that no longer exists.

Verizon doesn't owe me anything except fair treatment. Treat all users the same.

I suggest anyone getting the notice go to FCC Complaints and file a complaint with the FCC.

Why were you watching on your phone? And using data?

Why not? If I/he are paying for "unlimited" data, why can't I watch what I want, when I want on my phone? I don't get it. No justification is needed on why a person uses data they pay for. I don't ever use wifi for my phone. I pay for unlimited data. it says so on my bill.

SO they are now saying that even if I stay within my TOS that I'm being abusive because I use the data I pay for?

I'm pretty sure there is language in the TOS along the lines of being able to unilaterally cancel a plan/service for excessive use or abuse.

The FCC is no slam dunk here. While VZW was not allowed to throttle 4G, they WERE able to still charge for and limit tethering on UDP plans (but could not on limited plans).

If VZW said "use more than 5GB and we're going to boot you" there may be an issue. But 100GB+ for $50 a month is so far beyond anything else they offer that I doubt there's an issue. Is the FCC going to step-in and screw all the grandfathered UDP's who use lots of data, but not egregious amounts, and are still gettin good value as a result? I should hope not.

I wasn't asking for justification. I wasn't bring critical. I was just curious.

Honestly. I was a UDP holder until a year ago or so when I added in my fiancé. I had to move to a tiered plan. Couldn't find a loophole. I keep a 10gb plan between us and honestly, with wifi at home and such, I'm having a hard time figuring out how people are using even 20 GB. We hit 10 GB just last month for the first time EVER. Even when I was UDP I never hit 10 GB without downloading movies and such.
I mean those who do, how are you doing it? Are you literally using Verizon for your ISP?
Lastly, unless you are one of the few who are under contract, month to month users don't have a leg to stand on. Trust me i know, I had another service that I did the same on. Once they fill the terms of the contract, they don't have to honor it past what month you pay for. It sucks but that's how it goes sometimes.

It's not that difficult @Amagine . I used 29gig of data on YouTube alone last month. We all use our devices differently.

Jesus, find a hobby. :)

I say the same thing to grown men who spend hours playing Ingress and Pokemon, but to each their own I guess. [emoji2]
I can go through 100gig with my eyes closed but that's just me. If I lose UD I lose UD, I'm sure I'll survive.

Bingo. Granted, I don't watch hardly any video on my phone (and music is a non-starter - maybe 90MB per hour for hi-def).

My usage is 80% tethering when I travel - and half that is box sync (on my pc).

There are many ways to unnecessarily burn data. But if it mattered, MOST people could easily get under 20GB per month.

Granted, I'm sure it's possible if you want to watch 50 Netflix movies a month on your phone....but that begs the question "WTF is wrong with you?!?"

You can't justify or compare your usage with someone else. Saying everyone can be under 20GB a month isn't feasible either. I know a family who have a UDP and pay for the hotspot, another $30 a month. Why because they don't have internet where they live. Everyone assumes because they have google fiber, cable, dsl, etc that everyone else in the country does too. This is not the case. Everyone's situation is different. Everyone uses their device differently. My coworker's husband used almost 15GB during the NFL draft last year. How? Twitter. His feed had tons of pictures and videos.

Take a 5 minute 1080p video and upload it, you're using data. Watch a youtube video, you're using data. Why do we use more data when we travel? Could it be due to the fact we aren't connected to wifi or there isn't one provided?

We now know 100GB is the hard limit. That's fine. I know what not to go over.

Video games, especially social ones like Ingress and PGo = hobby.
Watching 50 movies on Netflix on your phone in one month = seriously, find some friends.

I s/w Verizon last night. According to them it will be the Top 5% of the Top users that get effected. I will probably finally give up the Unlimited because I simply don't use it. I use about 4gb a month. They raised my data from $29 to $49. So I'm paying $20 more for something I dont use antway.
