Verizon Plans to Stop Unsanctioned Tethering that Uses Unofficial Apps

Honestly I hadn't used it in forever and always used it sparingly but on Sunday I was sitting at home having router problems so I just tethered to my laptop for about a hour just web browsing about the Bionic and never once experienced any issues. PDA nets app said I only used about 25mb of data in that timeframe.

I've never really heard VZW's "claimed" justification (we all know the real one) for charging extra for tethering, but I would guess that they claim they aren't charging for the use of more data, but to provide you the feature on your phone to tether, like adding on call waiting, voice mail, visual voice mail, and so on... If this is the case I just see the $30 as VZW's "IT fee" to provide people the ability to tether that don't know how to do it on their own... us being fairly competent computer/phone people don't require such "IT services" so we don't feel the need to pay for them. Same way that I use Google voice for my voice mail and if I was paying extra for Verizon's voice mail service I would have canceled it long ago

^ To that point, they are charging for something that is already built into the OS of the phone, but blocked by the carriers.

Same crap they pulled a few years ago by blocking Google Maps from accessing the GPS in Windows Mobile devices and forcing users to pay $9.99 a month for VZNavigator.

It's the standard business model of "Let me sell this to you crippled and then charge you to fix it." Hence the perks of knowing how to fix it on our own!

That is true. I do pay them monthly to rip me off. But I actively seek ways to get the most for my money and not waste it by double paying for something. That separates me from the ignorant customers that don't know any better?

How does it separate you? You've stated before you don't abuse tethering and you admit now that you're being ripped off You're less ignorant because you acknowledge you're getting ripped off? I think that makes you doubly ignorant

It separates me on one point. I cannot get around the initial ripoff that is the overpriced service, and unused minutes I pay more for than the data itself, so I admit I am ignorant for even having the service in the first place I guess.

Would you like another analogy where I call the ones who pay double for the EXACT same service twice ignorant and moronic?

In the end I am separated from the ones who don't know better and pay for tethering because they see it as a value added concept, when the value was stripped away in the first place, and added back as an extra charge.

Kinda like the text msging and voice plans you have. You can't say it's about choice because there are other choices...so again, if ppl paying for tethering are ignorant so are those who know they're getting ripped off and don't go to a "better" company....

I will only move if there is a better value elsewhere. Right now there isn't. I have the best network coupled with the ability to tether when I want and how I want without paying extra for it.

Also why are you defending the action of paying extra for tethering capabilities? The only sane defense would be if one were profiting from the measure.

As long as you know you're being ripped off, it's cool. I love how ppl are vigilantes when it comes to tethering and allow themselves to get ripped off in twenty different other ways....you're especially funny because you don't abuse it, so you're essentially getting ripped off with not much benefit

I'm defending the tos I agreed to. The only sane action would be not signing it if I disagreed....

My thoughts are this, I am already paying for a data plan and what should it matter if I am surfing on my Droid or on my desktop. They are both using the same amount of data.
