Verizon Plans to Stop Unsanctioned Tethering that Uses Unofficial Apps

I'm getting ripped off in one way. The voice minutes. I have already weened myself off of text messages, so I have everything else tucked in data.

But that 40 number comes into play outside of Verizon. So I will give you that. Haha.

Yeah, ignorance is bliss

I'm completely confused on what point you are trying to make... are you saying anyone who is paying for tethering or anyone who is giving their money to Verizon is overpaying and ignorant and so on...

Hah yeah...everyone is all "I don't care" when the truth is vzw hadn't done anything yet...I can't wait for the mass exodus to sprint lol

What exactly do you expect anyone to do, other than leave to another carrier? Are we going to blow up VZW? No. Are we going to go on a rampage? No. Are we going to leave to another carrier, and take our money elsewhere? Absolutely.

Recently, VZW has been following a carrier, that in a sense, can't even touch them, AT&T. Why hasn't VZW taken the lead and set the standard, but instead, they allow AT&T, with a very sub-par network, set the standard.

I've had VZW since August, 2010. Frankly, I'm tired of them. I'm tired of price increases, and I'm tired of them changing the rules as they see fit. That's fine, but when my contract is up, I'm heading to prepaid.

I find it funny that while prepaid services are keeping up with pricing as it should in this decade, while VZW is taking the 90's approach, charging an arm and a leg for data.

I agree on that one. And that is why I'm not happy. ;)

That's right, you accept and embrace your ignorance haha...i too can't wait till vzw does something about it...I'm ok with never hearing a buffet analogy again lol

Nice turnaround. When and if the day comes I can no longer get around the inane parts of the Verizon TOS I will take my business elsewhere. But I seriously doubt that time will come.

I would expect ppl who whine about a carrier nonstop to leave....so far the same ppl whining are still...whining.

Like I said why the vigilante mentailty when it comes to tethering when vzw is just ripping you off in every other way imagineable? Because you can circumvent it? Great.

The truth is, as otr said when/if vzw actually takes action, everyone will comply...the "I'm going to sprint!" crap is just bully in the schoolyard talk cuz no ones actually doing anything about it

Work on Droid X?

I can't directly confirm that bcuz I haven't actually done it as I have on the other 3 phones I mentioned. But according to what I read it definitely does. The number that you change are the exact same numbers for each device. But others have definitely had success with it on a droid X

Nice. I will look into this. Is this similar to the TBH patch? I am using that one currently.

Its 100% based off of the TBH patch. Head over to the D3 forums and you will find everything over there. That includes instructions on how to do it and a in-depth expanation of how the TBH patch works. FYI it might seem like its complicated to do but once you have everything installed on your computer the process literally takes no more than 5 minutes.

I will most definitely do something about it. I have a need to tether other devices, but am unwilling to pay for it because I already paid for 'data processed through my smartphone'. I have no need for a mobile broadband plan since I have a phone to begin with.

you complain about prices and not being able to use your PHONES data to run every device in your house and you are a big reason data cost's as much as it does. Blatant misuse of the system. Whether VZW rips you off or not is not the point. At the end of the day you are partially responsible for tiered data, gross price points and tethering packages.

I guarantee if vzw somehow shuts it down you'll be here whining about whether anyone found a patch yet....

Tiered data and separate tethering costs are NOT a cause of people using a lot of data. Throttling would be put in place if this were true. It is simply a money grab by a corporation. Don't be so naive as to be blinded by the violent ignorance you are spewing out of your mouth.

It's called big business, get used to it. I am not saying the prices are fair but they are what they are. There is no "grass is greener on the other side" company to jump to. Your ignorance blinds you to the reality of a company turning a profit. So long as we keep paying our bills (which we always will) the prices will remain the same or go even higher. If you owned VZW you would be doing the exact same thing, well unless you wanted to run the company straight into the ground. Morally I don't care if you tether or not, like I said, that's not the issue here. Your sense of entitlement is so outrageous that it's becoming quite comical. VZW doesn't owe you crap except the package you payed for which BTW does not include tethering. Get over it. I am done, keep fighting the good fight brother.

My plan does include tethering. I am using my phones data, it is processed through the phone. I am not a mobile broadband customer because I do not connect to their mobile broadband network in a completely different way than the phone connects to the 3g network. I am using the 3g network in which I signed up for unlimited data.

The only self entitlement issues would stem from someone cracking the VZW wireless tethering/3g mobile hotspot app and using it without paying for it. That would flat out stealing service.

I am using a free community provided app to use the unlimited 3g data that I bought and paid for legally.

The people using it as an ISP have ruined it for the people who just want to do it every now and again. Ah, well. It was nice while it lasted.

I don't think that's it at all.

The fact is, Vzw knows they can get more money, and so they are going to do whatever it takes.

Exactly. VZW will charge for anything and everything they can to make money. People try to make it out as stealing and it really isn't, other than by VZW's definition. If you went and bought a new car, paid $20k for it and then Ford said that they would charge you an extra $50 a month on top of your payment to make left hand turns, that amounts to what they are doing here in a lot of ways.

Just because they take a built in feature and on paper, break it out as a separate feature and add a fee, doesn't make it an additional feature, not all the time anyway. They are charging for it only because they think that people will be willing to pay for it. They would charge you per character of text, if they thought that most people would pay it. The only reason they offer unlimited text, is because another carrier did and so to be competitive they need to do it also.

They offered unlimited data because one carrier did, but then one carrier decides to cap and tier data, so the rest do.

As soon as someone offers free tethering, but limits the data to whatever your phone's data tier is, the rest will drop it.

They would start charging you $300 a month, starting tomorrow for the same plan you have today, if they thought that they could get away with it.

Yeah, every company wants a profit, but there are times that they get greedy. Like Netflix decided to just double their rates overnight, things like that...

The Pro-VZW crowd here won't agree with you. I know that you pay for your data, and as long as you stay within the AMOUNT of data that you purchase each month, I don't see why it matters if I use my phone's browser or tether a tablet and use its browser. The end result is the same. You are not taking more data than you paid for, you are not breaking the law or providing that data to others that did not pay for the plan.

You are using your data, that you paid for, but VZW wants you to pay more, they want you to pay for the same data twice in effect. You are using the same device on their network, accessing the exact same data through the same channel, but they want you to pay for it once on your data plan, and then they want to charge you an extra $240 a year to take those very same data packets and pass it to your tablet.

It's only "stealing" by the way that *they* define it, which they do so that they can charge you for the same service twice...
