Verizon warning while tethering

The fact is that you pay for unlimited data for one device and one device only (one phone) and tethering is not allowed. I think it's pretty black and white...

i agree with you in this regard but that's a very unpopular position to hold right now. i don't have any moral position on the whole thing, but yes it is black and white, whether you like it or not. honestly i understand both sides of the argument, but hey they're the ones who provide the network.

Well in a way, only the newer version that is now blocked by Verizon is stealing a paid service. The old wireless tether is simply using an ad-hoc connection to share internet, which severely limits its use.

Just keep in mind my post above yours. Originally Verizon didn't even have a hotspot set up on the Droid's and actually recommended alternate methods. It was a grey area but it went out of control. Basically, they had opened Pandora's Box and are now trying to close it.

Oh and tethering was against TOS, not illegal. Piracy is illegal. That is a definite. Also, at the advent of the Droid's, Verizon themselves didn't have the hotspot available and actually had users tether by alternate methods. This is a liquid situation that is changing.

How do you know that? Just because no one has been taken to court for it? You can't say for 100% that it is legal or illegal, but if I was a betting man I'd bet that circumventing a paid service, and then abusing the network is illegal. It definitely violates TOS that's a definite, and I'm pretty sure it's illegal in the law sense too.

It's one thing if you sue Verizon pre-emptively and say "I pay for data once, this is not fair"...it's another thing if you go out of your way to steal service, abuse the network, and then when you get caught say "I pay for data once, this is not fair". The users who abuse tethering are knowingly doing something that they know is wrong, hiding it, and then posting on DF "I don't care" like they're in full control of the situation or something...

Exactly. Forget morality, that has nothing to do with it, but I don't see how people can even begin to argue that it's legal though. The terms are clear, and you're stealing a paid service by circumventing it. That's why I dont get why it's allowed as a discussion topic on this forum, but piracy is an "OMGGG, no you can't talk about that!!!" subject. Makes no sense.

Honestly, I'm not getting into legalities now. That's not my job nor am I paid for it. Go ahead and continue considering us hypocrites. I've already stated things may change, we don't know yet. But I have no desire to go round and round about this. You think what you think, that's fine. I'm not going to rehash talk points over and over again. I have a regular job I still have to work at.

This is all justifications, honestly. Acting ignorant is not a justification. People know right and wrong, and like I said, if people are doing this because verizon said it's not possible, they wouldn't be trying to hide it. The fact is people know it's wrong and do it anyway.

Seriously, enough, you've made your point. Can you give us a few minutes to see what happens with this? And there is a difference between illegal and TOS situations. You will NOT get put in jail for tethering against the TOS. You WILL get put in jail for pirating software. Happens a lot.

As I said, enough. Let it go for now. You made your point. And be careful starting the ignorant comments.

Sure, you guys are the mods haha. I don't know why you're sounding upset about it. It was a legitimate question. Did not mean to offend you...

BTW, no one is saying they're going to put you in the electric chair for tethering...obviously. Just because it's not a "punishable by prison" offense doesn't mean it can't be illegal...

Don't start the mod comments. That's annoying. I would be saying the same thing as a regular member in this situation. And I said what I did because you are pushing the same point over and over again. We get it. You are going to keep pushing and inciting this into a flame session. Not really in the mood for that today.

The "mod comments" was in reply to your question of whether you guys can get a few minutes to figure it out. I didnt mean any offense by that either...you just misunderstood what I meant. No one is pushing anything, although it just sounds like I hit a nerve.

It just sounds like you're having a bad day or something and taking it out on me...I'll stop...

it's not easy for the staff to keep this place running. they have to find the right ground to please everyone. as jkhonea said, this is an evolving issue and for all we know it could be totally different when we wake up tomorrow. for now though, lets just cool it and give it a rest.

Thanks, and if I misunderstood your post, I apologize. Not necessarily a bad day yet, but when I see several threads starting to go this way, I know it's going to make for a crappy night. I actually usually agree with you and have defended your same positions in several other threads. The main point is this just dropped out of the blue so we may have to rethink things. Not many of the staff are online right now, so I've been catching a lot of these threads myself until we can see what the final outcome is going to be.
